Can someone please explain the points scoring system in the championships.

I get the top three go up and bottom three go down a league, however I don't understand the points allocation for each place finish. Is this determined by stage or event? And doesn't anyone know what placed finish scores how many points as well?

For one event (means all stages in one location), the times of all stages are added. The event ranking is based on that summed up time. So the driver with the lowest overall time wins the event.

After every event, first gets 25 points, second 18, third 15 and so on (see below). Those are your championship points. They will also be added for all events in the championship. The driver with the most points after all events will win the championship.

First 10 drivers in an event get points:
1st - 25
2nd -18
3rd - 15
4th -12
5th - 10
6th - 8
7th - 6
8th - 4
9th - 2
10th - 1

Thanks. It was more the points for positions I needed to know, helps to know how many places ahead of someone I need to finish to be able to move up a league.

I'm just wondering. What if I match someone in the first place? I'm currently 7 points behind. If I win the last event and my opponent comes second (which he will, unless he beats me or crashes, the latter being very unlikely), we'll both have the same amount of points. Will I be given the championship win thanks to winning 4 events while he only won 2? I'm guessing so. Gotta push really hard in Finland to beat him though, so I'll try and find out.

Getting back to you about it. I feel robbed :D
We finished with even points and Amzah was given the first place, while I was left with the second. The game even told me I needed 0 more points to win.

Turns out, in Dirt Rally it's not about the amount of better results (like it is in real life WRC, F1, etc., I even looked up the rules to confirm this is truth), it's probably about consistency.
I had 4 wins, one 4th and one 5th place finish, while Amzah won the first two and finished 2nd in the remaining four, giving him a better average result. Or maybe it's decided by comparing the season's worst result.

Either way, coming into the next season, I made sure to fully upgrade my new car before the first race, and I even took 30 stages of practice on snow to improve my results in Monte Carlo and Sweden. Finished two spots higher in Monte Carlo, Sweden will be the last event, and I'm now way ahead in the first place after winning 4 events. Seems like it's happening this season.
