3rd Person Camera VS Cockpit View
As you all know, we are allowed to switched between these views during a stage unless restricted in preferences for a meagre gain in $.

I'd like to bring up the elephant in the room where in 3rd Person, i can see far more ahead of the track than if i was in the car. This brings up the problem where if anybody wanted to hit a record time on leaderboards, they're going to have to do it in 3rd person mode, or memorise entire lengths of stages ( which is in the spirit of the game, and i dont mind doing so ).

Which brings us to the point where it would just be easier to do everything in 3rd person. Now im not against people playing in this mode, but i don't like the nagging at the back of my head that im getting the short end of the stick in worldwide split timings because of this,

thoughts anybody?

In general chase cam will be slower, you can see further ahead but you can't accurately judge where the front of your car is.
I usually prefer the 3rd person view in racing games, but I've found I'm actually better when using the cockpit view in DiRT Rally and I find having the HUD off helps too, less distraction.

The game just feels better to me when in cockpit view.
some people have mentioned the splitting of leaderboards will split the community, but i dont think so because you can just scroll through the different leaderboards at will in a few seconds.

I seen many threads where the same people tell each other to "play a more arcadey game instead then" as a solution instead, and it is simply ironic.

I never thought about gamepad users in regards to third person view, thanks to posters above for bringing up valid points !
(assuming you're talking about external cam) The main thing is not the seeing more ahead or not, it's how it feels to control the car.

Some years ago I tried a wheel (from a friend) and it obviously felt horrible with games using the usual external cam (with KB). Since the monitor was also a bit further away (due the space of the wheel on my desk, it felt even more horrendous to drive).
That said, driving with anything else than wheel, feels better (for a lot of people) to use the external cam. And it's not a question of being a noob or whatever raging elitists rant about. It's just how it is and how each one feels more comfortable with.

Relevant note: there's a bunch of situations during the stages where the trees or side rocks actually blind you more (the ammount you can see ahead) in External cam than on the inside cam(due inside cam being lower and less pivoted).
So there's advantages and disadvantages in all cases.

And like you said, if you're seriously trying to post something to the leaderboards, you'll probably doing that stage a bunch of times in advance, (or restarting the stage a lot in order to improve every time without mistakes). At that point you'll know the stage very well, and horizont view will be even more non-relevant.

I know how it is, because a few years back I was always trying to improve my times in CMcR 2005, although not worrying for a second about world leaderboards. I would even use other car if that was the case. Was just for self-improvement and the rush/adrenaline of doing error-free runs while aiming to go faster every time. That took a lot of restarts and therefore I already knew very well what was coming ahead.

Chasecam is fine for 10-year-olds or those that can't drive. But if you're posting record times and using chasecam, assists, and a gamepad... well, that always annoyed the hell out of me. Having the camera up and back, while being able to see exactly where your car is during a turn, provides a pretty big advantage.

It has no place in leaderboards, ESPECIALLY in a sim game.

I suggested it before, and I'll do so now. In a race, allow me see which view the other drivers are using, if they have a gamepad or wheel, and if they're using assists. I want to know if I'm on equal footing, particularly in a close race.
Here's something odd...

Agreed that cockpit view is certainly more 'sim'. I have a G27 sim setup, hard mounted, with a racing seat (only single 29" display, though). But, I do also have a Oculus DK1 that typically works great for racing games (AC, for example). For most racing games, some sessions I play with monitor and others with the rift, depending on my mood. I would likely always use the rift... it is truly a better sim experience... if it wasn't for the DK1 low resolution.

But, for DiRT the cockpit VR view does not work (at least on my system). The inside of the cockpit looks fine, but anything the outside world is completey messed up (almost hall-of-mirrors like)... totally unplayable. Hood cam is 'okay', but the view seems off a bit. Bumper cam would be fine except for being only about 6" off the ground... which is almost sickning in VR. So, I tried 3rd person view... actually looks and plays well ... but doesn't feel right with the wheel.

So, now if I'm feeling serious, I use my simrig with monitor. However, if I'm just wanting a little bit of racing 'fun' I'm playing in 3rd person view with my Oculus, and using a gamepad. I never thought I would ever do that. The head tracking allows you to look around and the view is decent 3D. Surprisingly good. Plus, playing in both views is a decent way to learn the courses too (we can't walk them first).

Very happy with this new DiRT game. Glad they want back to a more serious attempt a rally and stopped with all the other bs.

Happy racing everyone.

haha, i wish we could walk the courses. i've been killed multiple times by blind corners and sudden changes in direction off a cliff after a blind corner in greece.

so far, the most enjoyable / easy drive has been scotland.
Quite honestly when i was playing the game using a gamepad it was hard in third person but when i went to the cockpit view it was suddenly much easier this is likely to be because i could actually see how far the driver was turning the wheel in relation to the joystick. A racing game that's easier in first-person who knew!
Imho i'd rather lock the online events to hardcore. That means all assists off, cockpit cameras forced and just the hud allowed.
As for the shifting there's no point locking it to manual because being on manual already proves to be an advantage to automatic (specially on curves).

I thought the tier system worked like leagues where you would rank up just like in Career SP, but it seems it's just a one-time time based record on the stage / rally. I really wish it would be like Career SP leagues because it'd make a lot more sense specially for the Monthly online events.

Well.. can't have everything. I hope they come up with a special league system in the future just like real WRC, to stand out the best drivers plus marketeer the game through competitive candy...because everyone loves a bit of competition ;)

I have mine locked to cockpit. I like the realism of sitting inside the car.
Play however you like to play.
Origineel geplaatst door Hellward:
Same here Spacedeck, locked onto cockpit view, with no hud. Forget the arcade 'tricks' :)

Thats how I play too, love the cockpit view. I tried 3rd person once and I actually crashed more... I normally play in cockpit, no assists, professional AI, and with a controller (not wheel). I dont use recovery unless how no choice, mainly auto does it as I am getting back on track or I would have hit a person.

I dont care about the tracking of people who use automatic, cause they will usually be slower..

I personally prefer the chase cam, because I think it's more difficult.

You need to take into account which way the car's current heading is, as you decide which way to steer - it brings an extra variable into the game making it more challenging and fun.
I always play in third person view because I like watching the car entering the corners, the wheels spinning and all the pretty graphics and stuff :3. The cockpit looks like a game from 2002...
I don't care that it's an option, but I do think the leaderboards should be seperated for anyone who uses "Less than simulator settings"

ie: Reduced steering radius (soft lock and full rotation); lessened or removed FFB; Sequential shift on an H-Pattern vehicle; Head cam only; etc.....

There's a few people at the top of the leaderboards who IMO are cheats in the respect that they use "Less than simulator" settings to gain an advantage over others who play for realisim instead of just the best times.

By all means, play how you'd like.... But your times shouldn't be compared to those who don't cheat.
I like the 3rd Person Camera, you see more from your nice car and from the Track and Landscapes.

As for the multiplayer. No one forces players to drive in the cockpit. In this respect it is not unfair to drive with the 3rd person camera. If it is fun for you to drive in the cockpit camera, it does not care if another player has an "advantage". But if you are going to present yourself as a hardcore gamer, you are naturally annoyed when you have a "disadvantage" against other people.

Conclusion:

Drive as you enjoy. If you're going to have fun with your way of driving Style then Leaderboards do not matter. Then it is not important for you whether other players have driven the good times with: steering wheel, gamepad, 3rd person camera, cockpit camera or with or without driving assistance.

I think it is childish and immature to call people as noobs just because they want to play differently and in a thing that is just a hobby (games) are not good.
