The handbrake is used in ALL rally cars because it's the most efficient and fastest way around a tight hairpin corner. Powering a RWD car around only works well on a wide hairpin.
In a sim it's a technique that needs to be mastered and it's hard to get the timing correct!
Handbrake turns in the real world requires the use of a clutch because you don't want to be fighting the gear box.
The handbrake in a sim should be an axis like a regular brake, it's not an on/off action.
