Is it possible to play well with Keyboard?
I loved the older racing games like grand prix 2 and loved Codemasters previous games.

Grand Prix 2 was crap with a keyboard though so is it possible to realistically play this with a keyboard or will I have to buy a wheel or a playstation controller to make it playable?

Would like to get multiple peoples opinions on different input devices.

You should be able to play it with a keyboard. I played DiRT 2 and 3 exculsively on keyboard. Good times :)

This is way more simmy than D2 or D3 though. It may run with a keyboard, but you'll have a serious disadvantage.

probably best way is with keyboard tbh

I feel the same way - not the physics model I was looking forward too. I mean, rally is where it's at for me but this just doesn't feel right.

Well from the looks of it I'm a minority here, everyone seems to be looking for 'sim' - don't remember it being that way in the Colin McRae Rally 04/2005 let alone Dirt 1/2/3

That's the question I'm here for. I've tried enough with wheels and gamepads to understand I'm a keyboard racer. I don't afraid a game to be more sim if you can fine-tune your car and probably use some driving assists.

So - how good or how bad this game is for a keyboard driving?

PS. This game looks to good to be true. Hope it is :D

I can confirm at least that it's nothing like Dirt 3 on the keyboard - I played Dirt 3 without assists too and handbraking into a corner at 100, trusting the engine will pull me out while I tap the direction key to opposite-lock is not something I've experienced in the hour I spent with this game.

EDIT (spelling) - Also like other hardcore racing sims, the feeling of understeer and non-responsiveness was quite frustrating, I tweaked the differential too and it didn't help much.

At the moment, the main problem with DiRT Rally and keyboard is mostly:

- The steering... it feels lazy "near the center", specially at higher speeds.
Quick-tapping the keys doesn't do much, so when you try to fine-correct the trajectory, you feel the need to press the button more time than you want to, and that means: the car might turn more than you expect and it doesn't give much room to correct what comes out of it. On those stages with narrow space and side obstacles, it's hard to quick correct if the car gets slightly out-balanced, because you press to turn the other way and it's already too much and too late, you'll probably be off. With some cars you actually hesitate to avoid a bit of vegetation or something, because the correction that you'ld make could result in not being able to actully recover from it.

This is specially frustrating on slippery Wales stages, because the car tends to not want to keep a straight line, it's not easy to correct it in detail, and sometimes you'll be frenetically tapping the throttle and the turning keys in order to keep it minimally under control. Also because you know that breaking takes more time/space in this game, and you need the car under control sooner, to put it where and how you want it, before the bend comes.

Therefore, with keyboard is quite playable, but it requires a few improvements, in my opinion. Not to make it easier, but to allow you to feel a bit more confident when you try to adjust and correct your trajectories.

PS: I hated all DiRT games and loved ColinMcRae ones. I appreciate the challenge of this game (reminds me of CMcR 3).

My first 40 minutes I spent so far playing with the keyboard. It's much more challenging than the other DiRT games control wise, that's for sure, but that is what makes it so much fun to drive. You really have to concentrate, otherwise you mess up and you either go flying off a mountain or go crashing into a tree :D

I have a G27 and 360 controller, but couldn't be bothered setting up the G27, since it takes up too much space and time. Will give the controller a try too, but so far I found the keyboard to be quite playable imho and will keep on using it :-)

It's very finicky with a keyboard... nearly impossible to play. But then all dirt games were like that (compared to say, Rally Championship). Would be nice to reduce sensitivity... maybe I'll turn the assists on.

I'm not quite sure about that - Dirt 3 was a treat to play on the keyboard, so was the original Dirt with the hillclimb stages.

It's clearly more on the sim side but I don't think the keyboard controls were tweaked to perfection. Some options to play around with those would be nice, shouldn't take away from players who are enjoying it with their wheels.

I played the old Colin McRae Rally games with a KB and you get used to it. No idea about this game.

seems fine with keyboard.
I've got a wheel but can't be bothered to set it up
