I see this very much as a low risk/cost project by Codies.
To try taking an established series in a very new (or old depending on your point of view) direction, with some of that risk mittegated by a bit of additional development funding via early access.
If it goes horribly wrong, then damage to the brand and company financials will be minimised.

I purchased Grid Autosport a couple of weeks back when it was announced that it was being released natively to Linux/SteamOS. Currently says so right on its store page.
