Online events - how do they work?

So I'm a bit of a PC newbie, and I am having a hard time understanding how to get an event to function. I'm registered at dirtgame.com, my account is linked to Steam.

At dirtgame.com I click on the dailyevent and the browser asks what app I want to launch. I choose Steam, and it says it's going to launch DiRT with the command "-daily"

The game launches as it normally does, but nothing happens. In the game, if I go into "leagues" I can click the first tile that then takes me back to the dirtgame.com page inside steam...but the event links don't work from there.

What am I doing wrong?

Daily events are not under leagues, there is a separate page with the daily, weekly and monthly events. Can all be accessed in game without going to the webpage.
Its under Career/Online Events
