Which way to go about it I guess is a matter of opinion. One the one hand, in reality, these parts aren't going to start wearing out with the distances we drive in game. On the other, scaling them to the stage lengths, while it might not be real, it would give players a sense of tension that drivers might face in real life.
Personally, I say give us as many real life length stages as possible so these things do become [potential] issues we have to think about and balance. :p
Also: the chances to puncture your tyre. Would be swell if our driving-style throughout long stages had more influence on the probability than scruffing some "sand" on the side of the road.
