So if it was a four lap race, you would drive three of those laps on the main circuit but choose one lap to drive the extra piece of road. Whichever lap you choose to 'take the joker' on might depend on how your race is going at the time.
This, just to add also that it can also class as a penalty for jumping the start etc so if you jump the start, you have to take it twice :)
But a lot of times I will take it on lap 1 because the cars are so bunched up that you can catch up almost instantly and wait for them to take the joker and sometimes it's just easier to chase than lead.
It is a 15 second penalty for missing a joker lap I believe.
Front of you is a car which you can't pass: Joker as early as can. Other wise do it in last lap.

You need to keep your eyes open when dealing whith a joker lap and real people. Try using your senses and get in out of the way... Careful on exit now...
