Tree's don't seem to cast shadows on themselves..
It looks really strange on tracks like Greece or Finland, where the ground will be covered with shadows yet the tree's are practically glowing.

Any way to change this? Is this a bug, or a design decision?

What are your graphic settings?

It's irrelivant, the trees don't cast shadows on themselves regardless of setting - Ultra or Low. They'll have this ugly 'sortof-shadow' if the tracks are set to sunset and the sun isn't directly overhead, but if it's set to day, the tree's will only cast shadows onto the ground, and not their own leaves.

Can you post a screenshot of what looks wrong to you? Can't say I've noticed any such thing, but it's possible that I've been focusing on the road too much. ;)

For instance, the foliage looks okay to me here:

This is Midday/Sunny, and the trees are clearly lit more on one side than the other. The shaded side is not extremely dark because there's a lot of diffuse illumination reflecting from everything. At any rate they certainly aren't glowing.

That doesn't look right at all. Notice how the shadows under the trees are rendering, yet the leaves are completely unaffected by the shadows that should be casting over them.

The right side of the image has trees that should be covered with shadows, but they're not affected by them at all. The trunks of the trees aren't even effected by the shadows, let alone the leaves.

If you say so. Between the diffuse illumination scattered from the ground and other trees, and the light filtering through the pine needles, I don't think it looks wrong. There's a high level of ambient illumination because the scene is *brightly lit*. Why should the trees on the right be covered with shadows? They're catching the same illumination coming from the top right of the image as everything else. The sun is almost overhead.

Sure, it looks like a screenshot from a video game; it doesn't look photorealistic, but the trees are clearly rendered according to the same rules as everything else in the scene.

Here we can see the bushes are completely ignoring the shadows that should be casting over them. Leaves below the uppermost leaves on trees are not recieving shadows from the leaves above them at all.

Here we can see more bushes and trees completely ignoring the shadows that should be casting over them. The uppermost trees on the image show that the lightsource is coming from the front and above the trees, yet the ground below the trees still cast shadows unto the ground.

It's like the trees and bushes are receiving light the ground is NOT receiving, while the trees and bushes are not receiving shadows only the ground seem to be recieving.

Ultra settings, 1920x1080.

Okay, I guess I see what you're seeing now. It's still only sometimes noticeable.

Now, drive faster, and you won't have time to notice it at all. ;)

well driving a rallycar and looking at the trees and the scenery is a sure fire way of crashing out. So you have no other really impotant stuff to whine about in the game? Cars are handling ok? The sounds are to your likeing? Weather not causing your FPS to drop? Punctures? No? Nothing else? Well f**k. So all you have to complain about is the F**King trees? F88k off!!!!!!

I see what the OP is pointing out, he's right. Nothing game breaking though, as others have already stated, my eyes tend to be on the road not on the trees. I will say though that looking at the top of the tree line does help at times to know which sort of turn is coming up.
Who has time to look at trees!!!

If every tree and bush had even more shadows or increased even more shadow calculations, the game would more than likely be this generation's Crysis considering how many trees and foilage there are. ;)

I am going to assume with 99% certainty that it was probably a design decision in order to keep the frames high. I think it is perfectly acceptable as the sole point is to race.

Now if this was a AAA open-world immersive RPG, then yes, I would say they should have added the shadows.
