Starts in VR mode - how to disable?
This might seem silly but ever since the update that added VR support I can't play the game without VR. I have a triple monitor setup and while the VR support is good I'd much rather play it on my monitors and not in VR. I've tried closing Oculus Home before launching and I see no options in game to disable VR. I've set resolution to my correct settings (5900x1080) and full screen. It's not my hardware as I played it many many times pre-VR update.

UPDATE 8/15/19
There are only 2 solutions to this problem
Oculus/Vive users: stop the services that run the Oculus/Vive before you launch the game and start them after (post below has the commands for Oculus users)

Just stop the Oculus VR Runtime Service

you can also make a bat file

to disable oculus:
net stop Oculus VR Runtime Service

to enable oculus:
net start Oculus VR Runtime Service

run bat file as administrator

Which headset are you using?
Rift

Well if you're running the Rift the post I made, and others, with the commands to stop the Oculus service will absolutely fix the problem. If that service isn't running Steam has no idea you even have a Rift and therefore it won't try to start in VR. Just make sure you run them "as administrator" so that it has access to actually stop the services.

Should be really really easy for you.

Do you have a Rift and finding that this works? or are you just trying to help and are very knowledgeable.

if i stop the Oculus VR Runtime Service and then start-up Dirt Rally 2.0 from Steam i get a error (108) cos the headset not found on sart-up

thanks Paul

Yes, I've own the DK2 and the CV1 since release and while I don't use it anymore (I upgraded to the amazing HP Reverb) I know it exceedingly well (and also run a Youtube channel dedicated to the VR game Elite Dangerous).

Now you just changed gears though - this is the Dirt Rally 1.0 forum - NOT the 2.0 forum. As I haven't played 2.0 I can't say for sure - that said here's what *should* work

- Stop the Oculus service
- Close Steam VR
- Right click on Dirt Rally
- Choose launch/play (whatever it says) and NOT the VR option

And that should do it - but again you're in the wrong forum asking about the wrong game ;-)

Oh, and FYI I've owned or was sent to test the DK2, CV1, Rift S, Oculus Go, Samsung Odyssey, Odyssey+, Lenovo Explorer, PSVR, Pimax 4K, Pimax 5K+, OSVR and the current king of them all, the HP Reverb Pro. So yeah, I have a little experience with them ;-)

why not just add -novr to the start properties from within Steam on the Dirt Rally link ?

OMG thank you so much, this is what finally saved me from madness !

Oh and I wasn't even trying to get Dirt Rally 1, but 2.0 to work.

You need to disconnect your VR headset. We detect on launch if there is an Oculus attached or not, if there is we boot into VR.

Any chance for an update (or even DLC!) that removes the need for those 2 applications running? I´m on WMR and the only thing i really need/want is Steam VR.

GTA5 has hacks to make it possible, so why not?
DR 2.0 is out of question because it´s +60GB of content that i don´t even own -.-

Honest question here, are you people morons? Why would you force someone to start in VR for a game that is both and then not even provide a launch option?

The way I handle this is with an app called DevManView.exe - free and easy to use. You can use it to disable hardware devices like this:

DevManView.exe" /disable "HP Reverb VR Headset VR1000-2xxx"

Where the name of your device is in quotes. I have two scripts, one to disable and one to enable.

no, this is not something we should have to download extra ♥♥♥♥ for. devs need to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ listen to their customers.

Right, so rather than use a work around that I provided and is free you'll just stomp your feet and expect a fix for a 3+ year old game that's out of development and has moved on to the next version, which is also out of development. We'll see how that works out for you.

it's about the principle.

Sure, but your principals aren't going to change the fact that this is a 2 generation old game that is no longer in support/development. So if you want a solution I just gave it to you.

Careful, you're using logic and facts - that's clearly not going to help this thread.

And finally here's the small batch file I wrote to help with this. For those that aren't sure what that is or how to create one here's a little guide so that you too can play Dirt Rally on your monitors vs. the Rift.

First create a text file by right clicking on your desktop (or somewhere in Windows Explorer) and go to New -> Text Document. Name it something like "disable-vr.bat" - when you hit enter it will ask you to confirm you want to change the file type, go ahead and hit yes.

Next right click on that newly created file and choose "Edit". Then take everything below between the two lines and paste it into the notepad document that opens

-------------------------------------------
@echo off
echo Preparing to disable Oculus Runtime Services
pause

net stop OVRService

echo Oculus Runtime Stopped, enjoy your non-VR experience
echo When you're ready to re-enable VR
pause

net start OVRService

echo Oculus Runtime Services have been re-enabled
echo Enjoy your Virtual Reality experiences and
pause
-------------------------------------------

Now close the file and when it asks save the contents. Finally when you're ready to play in non-VR double click on the file, it will ask you to press any key to disable VR, then just leave the dos box open and enjoy your game. When you're done go back to the window and hit any key and it will re-enable the Oculus service and VR will be restored.

Hope that helps someone else, very glad to have Dirt back...

-Ross

I also hate to open an old thread but you really helped me!
Thank you!!

BTW, this problem didn't fixed by an update.
It still happnes.

Tom.
