Now look at today's cars and technology, it feels like to me you can just put the wheel in certain spots to acheive certain things. Wanna do a hairpin? Turn the top of your wheel to 6 o clock, sorta thing, it kinda goes where you point it. That's with like 520-540 on a Polo. It increases consistency to be able to put the wheel in predictable locations.
I don't think power steering has anything to do with the degrees of rotation in Rally cars. I have driven old cars without power steering and as long as you drive, it is no problem to turn the wheel. Yes it requires a bit more force but not too much. When you try to park your car in a small gap and you need to turn the wheels while standing, I did miss power steering a bit but that is not important for Rally driving.

The muscle memory is able to keep track of "how much do I need to turn the steering to get around this corner". It is just a matter of practise.

Normal cars still have about 900° today and 99.9% of them have power steering.

I believe that the reduced degrees in rally/racing cars is just an evolution to the old standard 900/1080. With less degrees the driver can countersteer faster, the driver can drive a lot of corners without crossing the hands or get in less trubble when he needs to shift but steer at the same time.

For normal drivers this is not relevant but a twitchy steering may be scary for some normal drivers so normal cars stay with the higher degrees.

In real life you won't be drifting a rally car. You can learn a lot from the master himself in the Drift Bible:

i just got back from learning to drift in real life, private property... its a lot different than i expected!

i use 900, just mess around and see what you like the most.

I generally use 720 degrees but it depends on cars (some newer cars are nicer at 540, some older cars even up at 900), I think down at 360 you're gonna get overly twitchy and unrealistic handling.

It depends on the car, a lot of cars made in the last 10 years if we're talking road cars actually have speed sensitive power steering too, not something you will find in a racing car to my knowledge.

Same here (G27).
I've been driving like this in all my games for years (except SLRE, but that's another story ;-) ).
Just let the game decide - so you don't have to fumble around with settings.
I have never experienced any issues with this setting in Dirt Rally.

360° is not like real life, but it's what suits me best. It's down to personal preference. Linearity of -4 makes it less twitchy around the middle.

Fredrik Åhlin, swedish wrc2 driver (Ford Fiesta R5) has 330degree rotation in his rallycar.
He was streaming and playing this game last year(November) at his friend and I asked him what degree he uses.

Today I checked some videos of Richard Burns and he had 540degrees in the Subaru 2001. In game soft lock rotation in that car is 720.
Colin McRae had 720 rotation in Focus 2001 and in the Subaru 1995. In game soft lock rotation in those cars is 720.

These things can all be changed by driver preference, typcally they use "Steering Quickeners" and the gearing can be changed.

^I'm not sure but if u want to enter FIA Historic Rally in a 70s rallycar you have keep the original rotation what it had when it was used in rallies. Also suspension, brakes and other parts are regulated by FIA so you can't improve the handling/performance of the car too much.

About the steering from FIA WRC regulations:
Only  parts  homologated  in  the  WRC  extension  may  be  used  (without any modification)

So, it's up to car's manuafacture, had it homologated a part which you are willing to install.

Rally cross 380 and rally cars 440

i have started using 720 degrees... its awesome... it does require more steering and more effort tho.. and a lot harder as well. very fun when you get the hang of it!

Just calibrate the wheel.
flagg Jun 17, 2016 @ 8:59am
540º or 720º
I use 720º
