Thrustmaster T300RS problems
I've played the game fine with the wheel just yesterday, but the wheel won't be recognized in the game. Yesterday I had the same problem, but I fixed it by rebooting Steam. However, that has not worked now. So I'm wondering if anyone experienced anything similar? It's very annoying as I just wanna play with the wheel, but it seems like it only works 20% of the times I launch the game.

@DelYXHardiee. Can you confirm you see the buttons on wheel listed as device in big pictures controller settings?

I renamed device but you should see "generic controller" or ps4 controller but your buttons on wheel base should get listed in Devices section of Big Pictures Controller Settings.

There are settings within big picture controller settings you may need to change as well as using Controller Options in Big Pictures Library launch options for each game.

You also may need to change settings within game.

In my experience if Steam Input is not configured for wheel base buttons as a device games have issues. imo we need to setup controller in Steam Input properly so everything works like expected in games and steam overlays and everything else.

Steam Input API (scapi) has been undergoing changes to help with gamepad emulation for android controllers and to help with non steamvr tracked controllers work better in steamvr as well as many other things. Steam Input has grown into an amazing piece of software, when it is working like expeceted.

Steam Input is really buggy for all controllers just now using Steam stable or beta branches. One way to help show if a problem with any controller is Steam Input related or not is to see if it is listed in Steam Input controller settings.

If you do not, then you will likely see issues.

I can reproduce what I am trying too describe on many hardware configs over a long period of time.

It is great everything seems to be working for you without device being listed in big picture.

If you use Thrustmaster Control Panel to check everything is working and then restart steam you could get Steam Input to detect wheel base buttons as controller and list it as device in big picture controller settings.

You need to be running steam client beta for best chances of controllers being listed in big pictures controller settings like expected. Once you have configured everything you can use dpad on wheel base to navigate big picture and use controller options to configure controller for game and then launch game. This is how to get games detecting your wheel properly and then be able able to use wheel in game like expected 100% of the time.

Unplug wheel and replug it in again ? Restart PC without wheel plugged in ? Logout on your PC and log back in ? Check your Thrustmaster software and update as required.

For nearly two years now I have found setting up your wheel base buttons in Steam Input is too fix a huge array of issues with steam games when trying to use wheel and pedals.

Basically all you need to do is:
  1. Make sure your wheel and pedals have latest firmware available from Thrustmaster website
  2. Make sure your wheel and pedal drivers are latest from Thrustmaster website

Okay thanks for the replies. I've found after trying multiple solutions, that the only fix currently is restarting my PC.

Does wheel work in other games everytime u play them? (if u dont have any other racing game to test this then download free Raceroom Racing Experience base game from steam).

When u start this game have u always pressed button(number 6) on the wheel in the first menu? On my t300 alcantara rim that start button (number 6) is on the bottom row, 2nd from left.

Also verify game files if u haven't done it already.

Do u have switch on the wheelbase in PS3-mode? On thrustmaster wheels it needs to be on ps3-mode when using it on pc.

Is the wheel connected into usb3.0 port? try on a usb2.0 port (or just in a different usb 3.0 port). If u have usb extension cable or usb hub in between wheel and pc then test without those.

Go to steam settings>controller>general and disable generic controller support and see if that helps (check if it's even enabled).

I have T300 alcantara edition(T3PA pedals with a clutch) but haven't played Dirt rally in 1,5months so idk how mine behaves in DR, but could issues be related to recent Win 10 updates maybe (if u have Win10). I played BeamNG+Assetto Corsa like a week ago and wheel was recognized+worked fine in those at least.

EDIT: I tried my wheel now and it works in dirt rally too.

Thank you so much for some of these suggestions. The wheel works just fine in all other games I play. I don't think I've always pressed that button. I usually just press the X button when the game starts, to get through the VR comfort screen, and yes I'm playing this in VR, and yes it is absolutely amazing, and yes I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem, but none the less I have tried verifying the files. It is on PS3 mode, yes. It's in a USB 3.0 port and I haven't tried putting it in a 2.0, so thank you for this. I could see this fixing it immediately, so I'll try this the next time I set it up. I'll try the controller settings next time aswell if the USB port fix doesn't seem to work out. Thanks a bunch for the suggestions bud ;)

Thanks a bunch. I believe I've fixed it now by mapping the buttons in Steam Big Picture. Thanks a lot for fixing my problem :)

Haha of course I gotta thank you. It's great of you to come on here to help other people out. Your instructions were very easy to follow aswell (if you're not completely new to Steam that is). Thanks again :)
