Also, I play Dirt Rally on and off for the last two years. D4 barely play since it came.
The question is...what are you looking for? Sim or arcade?
Take it for what it's worth. Good Luck.
2. Neither of them has a story, they are racing games. Dirt Rally is more immersive because of its better driving experience
3. About the same, though Dirt 4 is slightly improved (a few cars like that don't sound so great in DR have been improved)
4. I wouldn't know, HUD off is the most immersive rally experience.
5. This is where the biggest difference is, Dirt Rally wins hands down. I play with a steering wheel and to me DR is vastly better to drive. It's no Assetto Corsa sure but Dirt 4 has a weird wonky arcade handling that does not even seem like it's meant to be played with a steering wheel. Well, maybe if you have no concept of how to actually drive a car, then...
Dirt Rally >>>>> Dirt 4. Though, if you want an arcade controller game then you might consider D4, otherwise not
4: should be on a L plate system of some type and clearly defined... better yet refer to 2.
5: wheels are easier than a controller if you know what your doing and have the equipment. FFB is another story...
IMO
1. Graphics = Depends largely.. Australia in Dirt 4 looks amazing 10/10. However Michigan in D4 looks weird and out of place graphically.
2. Story immersiveness
Probably Dirt 4 there. (neither but car customisation and better team perks in Dirt 4).
3. Car (engine) sounds
Dirt Rally
4. HUD
Good question, i never paid any attention to the hud in both games. (had it disabled).
5. Gameplay (with steering wheel if possible)
Dirt 4 is harder to master (Pro Tip dont run on tracks generated with high stage complexity. There was not enough high complexity corners to choose from so stages get very repetitive and boring very quickly. Go for mid to low complexity for the best experience. (Except for Michigan which is just 95% flat throttle stages.)
Dirt Rally is a better choice, I'd reserve Dirt 4 play until you've gotten bored of Dirt Rally and looking for something new. Theres a good 40-60 hours in Dirt 4 if you can grasp the handling. Dirt Rally easily offers allot more.
I have to say.. After playing Dirt 4 its very hard to go back to Dirt Rally.
Thank you!
After I got bored with D4 after playing all content (60 hours) it was such a good thing going back to dirt rally. Felt like coming home. Over 1000 hours now.
And yes, I do own dirt 2 and 3 and Grid, besides most of the Mc Rae series.
Dirt 4 does have alternate driving modes though (theres trucks, buggies and Rally cross modes are pretty good but lacking track diversity.
With Dirt Rally its hard to say how you'll manage. It also Depends on if you will be doing Rally Cross or just normal Rally.
From my knowledge Dirt 4 does Rally cross better than Dirt Rally does. However As im not an expert on Rally Cross and 99% of my game time is spent in Rally i would'nt take my word for it. Hopefully some others will weigh in.
