DiRT Rally keeps crashing at start up
Hi,

I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction here. My copy of DiRT keeps crashing as soon as I start the game. Windows gives me a popup stating:
DiRT Rally Executable has stopped working.

I can check online for a solution(this never works) or close the program. That's it. I've tried all the steam troubleshooting items (verify integrity, reinstall...), even run as admin. Nothing seems to fix the issue or give a different error.

I checked the event viewer and I get this:

Faulting application name: drt.exe, version: 1.1.114.5105, time stamp: 0x57fcbba7
Faulting module name: drt.exe, version: 1.1.114.5105, time stamp: 0x57fcbba7
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00307127
Faulting process id: 0xb0c
Faulting application start time: 0x01d401f190b86954
Faulting application path: F:\Steam\steamapps\common\DiRT Rally\drt.exe
Faulting module path: F:\Steam\steamapps\common\DiRT Rally\drt.exe

Not sure if that helps any.

I am also running Win7 64bit
AMD Ryzen 7 1700
AMD Radeon R9 390

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you. :2017catheart:

Delete drt.exe from your P.C. and then start Steam and let Steam reinstall it.

Dont delete a thing! Best thing to do is reinstall Direct x and reinstall PysX, that should help you out.

I've already tried reinstalling it numerous times, without any avail.

I could try doing this. Is there a recommended way of doing this or do I just go out and find their respective exes and reinstall?

Thank you for your replys!

open steam folder, then open Steam Apps, open common files, open Dirt and then opn commonRedist, there you will find Direct X and vcredist and the files you need to re-install. Let me know how tings go.

@Cooked Jelly -- I ran the installers in the CommonRedist > DirectX and vcredist. Both of them ran without issue. I tried to run Dirt Rally again, and I am still getting the same "..Executable stopped working" error.

You mentioned to reinstall PhysX? as far as I can see the only things in the CommonRedist are DirectX and vcredist, which is the MS C++ redistributable, if I'm not mistaken. There aren't any files related to PhysX in all of the Dirt Rally installation directory (from a windows search). When I looked up online to install PhysX, it said it was an nvidia driver install. So Seeing that I have an AMD GPU, I'm not sure if that will screw up anything. Recommnedations on how to proceed?

But for sure, reinstalling those two things didn't make a difference.
Also, thank you for your help.

Hem, I am getting something like this as well.
Only it crashes as I am loading a stage or right when the stage loads and I go to start.

It is giving me the same error screen though.
I'll give some of the steps a try as well (already did the basics and also installed it on another drive).

Just wanted to let you know that you are not the only one!

Go into the Dirt Rally install directory. Right click on drt.exe and go to the Compatibility Tab , then down at the bottom theirs CHANGE SETTINGS FOR ALL USERS , theirs a check box after that opens up.. RUN THIS PROGRAM AS A ADMINISTRATOR.. Check that and APPLY , OK. Try that, as drt.exe might not have admin privledges.

Also.... Make sure Dirt Rally isn`t trying to run in a higher resolution than what your monitor can handle.

Hey guys, so technically this isn't really solved but I found a workaround. I believe the issue is that my CPU has too many cores.....yea...exactly :steamfacepalm:. So the only way to fix the issue, as far as I know is to limit the amount of cores your PC will use via msconfig. I have 16 cores (8 cores and 8 threads) and the game will only work is 4.

Somoene else posted about this here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/310560/discussions/1/1694919808738159439/

I don't think this is a solution because anytime I want to run this game I have to cap my cores, restart then launch the game, and when I'm done playing, uncap the cores and restart.

@Sudden -- my game won't start. It's not at load time for a map or anything. It will NOT start. (unless doing the above)

@Lexrax_VR -- I did run it as an admin. However I did not try compatibility mode for all users. I believe I tried switching it to XP or some other OSes but it didn't make a difference.

But thank you guys for your input. Hopefully there is an actual solution to this problem.

You dont have to cap your cores. I`m using a AMD Ryzen 1700 CPU with 8 Cores and 16 Threads, nothing has changed in my config file since its been installed in 2014. If you want i will post my config ???

Update
Use launch options in steam and set framerate cap 10fps above your monitor refresh rate. type this if u have 60hz monitor:
-fscap 70

This game is so abandoned... but maybe this is still a glitch. the game started crashing on me a few months back and it was completely error-less. just gone and no reason. first i thought maybe itwas driver or gpu, but alas no other games had issue. turns out this game has a janky unmention memory issue with user and workshop saved car setups. Try unsubbing from alot of your workshop items for dirt rally and then go into the game and see if its still crashing?

Not sure it's related, but I deleted my steam save games, and the MyGames->DirtRally folder.

Then at launch, Windows put up a strange message that it needed DirectPlay installed. Note- DirectPlay, not DirectX.

Once that installed- back to working.

if youre using msi afterburner or rivatuner, try turning the osd off before you launch the game. good luck.

This fixed it!
To avoid having to turn it off and on every time you play, you can also add a custom setting in RTSS for "drt.exe": Application detection level → "None"
