Do you play manual or automatic on game pads?
Having played Grid 2 most of the time, it's a hard transition from arcady game to an actual sim game. Tried automatic, seems boring. I'm currently learning manual transmission on Dirt Rally and damn it's so satisfying! (Using an X360 game pad, btw)

I’ve been playing with automatic for quite some time before switching to manual sequential. Yeah, manual is far more fun and you’re in absolute control. In short, manual is the way to go. ;)
Oh I realized you said game pads.. nvm..

For me, it would be a hard transition from DR to any other racing game ;-)

I imagine you use the d-pad for upshifting and downshifting - I can't imagine using h-pattern manual though.

I use buttons, yes. But even H shifter would be natural as it is the same as a real car. But newer DR cars use sequential gearbox anyway. In fact button shifting really sucks when your engine stops or you need to use reverse. I wish I could afford extra driving hardware...

Hold the downshift button, it should take you to 1st gear within a second or two.

manual, always

i bind shifting to B and Y, and handbrake to X
while it makes more sense the other way around, it does slightly discourage me from jamming the E-brake too often

Thanks for the tip :-)

Using manual, I get a fuller game experience even with pad.

I'm on gpad, manual. Also turned on clutch, don't remember where exacly. Sometimes it's very useful to put engine to high rpm using clutch instead of switching gear.
Automatic is boring even in arcade racing games. I hate Driver San Francisco because of auto-only transmission.

Is clutch needed for shifting or only for a launch?

Neither. But you can use it when you need it.

I used sequential transmission and I'm playing this game using keyboard.

Fine, I might try it with 205 T16. I really hate the turbo there. Its engine is unbearably dead in lower rpms.

I started using manual back when Dirt 3 came out, and I can't go back. Took a little bit of practice at first, but it's really not that hard, and you gain so much more control over automatic. I just use the alphabetical buttons "x" and "a" for sequential shifting, and the left trigger for clutch if I want it.

I would say that manual shifting is even necessary with RWD cars on a slippery surface, primarily in Sweden.
