My USB GamePad works in Windows but not Dirt Rally
My Controller is not working in DiRT Rally

I am using a USB gamepad controller that I can clearly see and use in the Windows Control Panel under game controllers. I can see the analogue sticks and every button press.

But for 2 weeks I have tried to make it work in Dirt Rally.. it does not work. I am about to pull the trigger for a full refund.

I can use my usb gamepad on every other game on the PC, including my favorite game called Inside that i have been playing all day.

I tried the keyboard in DiRT Rally, but you can't steer with the keyboard, its like a yoyo when you are at speed. its too rigid, and the steering curve on the keyboard is a nightmare.

Please help. is there any patch our for this game to fix this? or is this game ready for the recycle bin?

Cheers,
Hamish,

It might help someone else help you if you say what make/model gamepad you have and someone has experience with that model. It might be a matter of a switch on it that you might need to set to the other position (like xinput vs. direct input).

For example if you have Nvidia graphics, some people have had issues with GeForce Experience in Windows interfering. Personally when I was trying Win7 to see if a Logitech G29 racing wheel worked in Win7 (which I rarely use) that did not work in Linux, it worked at first in Win7, but when I updated my Nvidia driver from 376 to 382 the wheel suddenly stopped working in DiRT Rally. I uninstalled GeForce Experience (while keeping the Nvidia drivers) and the wheel worked again.

I did get the wheel working in Linux by reconfiguring the G29 as a G27, but that limits steering range. My Logitech F710 gamepad was no problem in Linux, so I would expect that would have no problems in Windows.

I can't imagine trying to play this game with a keyboard.

so are you saying the gamepad viewer in the control panel on windows is different to inside Dirt Rally. what a stupid windows system. shouldn't all apps see the gamepad controller the same just like a keyboard driver? if one app can see it, then shouldn't all apps see it? especially if windows can see the keyboard, then the Dirt Rally should see the keyboard. same goes for gamepad, if windows control gamepad viewer can see me pressing the buttons and moving the controller around, then so should dirt rally.. it's not rocket science.. well I am deleting Dirt Rally and going to another supplier for my Rally games.. piece out.

Go to Big Picture, go to options and check controller settings. There is a setting that makes your gamepad think it's a 360 controller, etc.

I also have ancient steering wheel without support from Feral side. I was able to get it working in game on Linux thanks this tool[github.com], which create virtual gamepad device and map your physical gamepad events on it.
