How to build roads?

How do you get free workers? I need 100 for a new settler but it never goes up further than 50 at times. Is there a trick?

Close the city panel
On map with your building squad selected, left-click on the first town then left-click on the second town that you want to link with the road.
Click the green checkmark.

OK, so I've done these steps several times (still in the early stages of the Campaign), but get no green checkmark. I select Sofia to start the road, select Budapest to finish the road, then it looks like I have to add a couple of way-points ---- but no green checkmark, and my building squad sits around doing nothing.

Ummmm ...... well, I just went & read the manual again, more carefully this time, and perhaps I shouldn't be "building" a road from Sofia to Buadpest (since a rutted trail already exists), perhaps I should be upgrading the existing road.

The "road" from Sofia to Budapest already exists. (I don't think you can upgrade (extend) that road befoe you unlock some tech). You will need to build a road from Sofia to Constanta a little further into the tutorial.
