New to Higurashi: Anime or VN first?

Higurashi has been a name that I've seen as always respected and critically acclaimed in anime and VN but now that I finally have the time to devote to anime, my question is this:

If I were to get into this, do I watch the Anime first, enjoy that story, then play the VN, or vice versa?

Obviously, there are pros and cons: watch the anime to see if I'll like the type of story so the VN game format doesn't push me away, stuff like that; but I'd like to support this type of content and I was planning to get into the series anyway, so..

what do you all suggest?

The anime is garbage in comparison, and ♥♥♥♥♥ up the tone from the very first scene. Read this, you won't regret it.

Visual Novel all the way.

I would recommend starting with the visual novel. It is very good at creating suspense and affecting the player through psychological tricks, this is possible because of its first person perspective. By watching the anime first you will know what is going to happen and a lot of its masterfulness won't work anymore.

the VN has been insanely good so far, the mood is set early on, and the changes to mood are well portrayed here. + This isn't some half-assed english subbed VN, it's actually incredibly well done, and I'm happy to see big name VN's coming to steam, hopefully there'll be more :P.

Read the VN first definitely. I regretted the anime being my first experience of Higurashi.

Read the VN first. The anime is okay, but it will completely ruin the visual novel for you.

I would recomend watching the first arc (like the first 4 or 5 episodes) just to get a taste (and to make you realize how disgustingly aweful the anime is) and then read the vns from start to finish. this is what I did and I'm thankful my 8th grade self didnt end up finishing the anime version years ago.

i finished the anime, and it was good back then for what was out... now I'm enjoying detective conan/fate stay night unlimited bladeworks, etc. anyways the VN is FAR superior to the anime, it's just crazy.

Both is awesome, but i prefer VN 1st cuz there is many little details what is not show in anime.

Definitely play the VN, if you have the money. The anime is good as a standalone work, but as an adaptation it's awful. The only part of the anime that doesn't butcher the VN is the first arc, which includes the first four episodes. Watch those if you want a taste of the story, and then play the VN to understand how much they messed up.
