For what it matters, the Visual Novel Database ( website dedicated make a database of all visualnovels) estimate the playing time of the whole thing(Kai excluded) to be from 30-50 hours, but I don't know how accurate they tend to be.
Btwm Chapter One is not quite the shortest one. The fourth Chapter is kind of an extra chapter, so it is the actual shortest, if I remember correctly.
Of course, this is just how long it took me to read these chapters and the actual amount of time it will take you to read them will depend largely on your reading speed.
But damn, all you guys read faster and faster than the last! Did you have auto set to max, or can you read so fast that it was better to just manually progress?!
No one has mentioned this yet, but each chapter is broken up further into smaller segments; I personally call these segments "episodes". Onikakushi is broken into 13 episodes.
Actually, at least in MangaGamer version of Higurashi, the default auto is soooo slow. Or, rather, text appears on the screen really slow; the pauses between lines aren't that long. So it is much better to manually progress.
Which causes some confusion as Umineko has its the other way; 8 individual parts are named 'episodes'.
I increased the auto speed from 50% along the bar to about 80% and only used manual progression when the text went through those unreadably fast sections.
