ひぐらしのなく頃に奉 鬼隠し編

So this might be a weird question...
As some of you may know the story Hinamizawa Bus Stop was basically the precursor to Higurashi, and was originally written as a play.

Now, let's say that an enterprising young uni student wanted to adapt this into an actual play at his place of study. What advice/information could you give to said person. The main thing I'm concerned with is obviously obtaining the rights to it (we'd have to sell tickets) and as far as I can tell I'd have to contact Ryukishi07 himself in order to obtain his permission for the play.

If anyone has any ideas of how to achieve this I would welcome any help. I'm not saying you'd be helping a youth obtain his dreams but you wouldn't be far off that. :P

If it is going to be like a homemade thing that will occur only once, I don't think that you would need to go so far as contact Ryukishi07 (while it would be appreciated). Think about Doujins for example, they are fanmade and still aren't free.

Find enough interested people and re-read it atleast 10 times until you think that you've caught all little details.

You understand Japanese or have watched it on youtube? Have a link? :trolol:

I read the manga version a while back and have now played the VN version via this guy's translation patch:

And you can watch it here if you don't actually own Higurashi Hou:

I actually wrote a monologue based on the first arc of higurashi a while back for my year 12 performance in Drama, so i am a little bit experienced in adapting Japanese material to be more understandable, as well as in cutting out bits and pieces of the story that aren't necessary.

I think I will try to make the rendition of Bus Stop to be as close to the original script as possible (after fixing up the translation a bit). Which is why I was asking about rights, I really don't want to get my uni sued over this.

I should probably clarify that the act of putting the show on will involve pitching it first. It may be difficult to convince the people I'm pitching to that not having rights is actually fine. For the record, I really don't think that Ryukishi would care anyway, he seems like a pretty cool artsy guy who just wants people to experience his story. I'm just covering all my bases here.
Thanks for these links.

Ryukishi07 says here[07th-expansion.net] that he doesn't mind people creating non-commercial derivative works. He does, however, mention that he does not own the copyrights to the music and sound effects.

Awesome, this is the kind of thing I was looking for. Still doesn't explicitly cover something that is a secondary creation which I'm actually going to sell, but I think this is enough for me to get the project going with reasonable legal security. I won't be using their sound effects, and I don't know that anyone else can actually sue me for Hinamizawa Bus Stop other than Ryukishi himself, since I don't think that MangaGamer actually has the rights to any arcs other than the main story set.

That said, if anyone has creative ideas for the piece, they're more than welcome to express them to me, so that I migth steal them and make my rendition of the play super-duper good. I'm gonna be pouring my heart and soul into this so any help is welcomed lol

So this might be a weird reply... but there's a certain other uni student much like yourself who happens to actually know Ryukishi, and could ask him about what he thinks of your adaptation.

Let's just say you don't have to worry about any lawsuits or anything, he's a pretty chill old guy, and would be very happy that youth like yourself would be interested in doing something like that. Especially since it'd be based off of one of his first works, when he was still pursuing *his* dreams... very appropriate. :tgrin:

MangaGamer sort of have rights to it in the sense that one of their parent companies is 07th Expansion's official Japanese distributor. But even then, the rights they have are mostly limited to the actual sound novel software itself, rather than the story (which is completely owned by Ryukishi07 and 07th Expansion).

But yeah, I have met Ryukishi07 and he was very courteous in allowing us to translate Higanbana and assist with various aspects of distribution matters. He is very open to derivative works, and he does reply to emails asking for permission to create them (of course, emails must be in Japanese, although we did communicate through English-speaking staff from their distributor on a few occasions).

There have been fan-created performing arts adaptations of 07th Expansion's works before, the Higurashi opera being one example.
Wow you guys have met Ryukishi? That's awesome! I hope I get to meet him someday. :)

I've actually contacted Mangagamer who are putting me through to their "overseas contact" at 07thExpansion. From what I've been told from various sources, yeah, Ryukishi wouldn't give a ♥♥♥♥, because he's a cool guy.

Buuuut my theatre society is very aware that most plays you have to obtain the rights of, and me rocking up and saying "hey he's probably okay with us putting it on" is only going to hurt my chances of my play being performed (because they can only put on so many plays in a year, and different "spots" have different requirements so there's only like two times in each year that I could actually put this on).

I'd most likely be putting it on in November this year, which gives me plenty of time to do things like localisation, and maybe modifying the second half a little bit, it's a lot of information to take in in such a short time. I'll have to have a think about that because I really do want to make it as faithful as possible.

All I need is an official statement of permission, and I'm good to go.

I must say you've certainly piqued my interest with this. Let us know how it goes. :-)

Haha I'm more worried about the pitching than anything else. Convincing my theatre people to actually put this on is gonna be a challenge.

Wait are you one of the guys working on Yandere Simulator? (I may have stalked your profiel I bit) I see you're making the yandere RPG and then you link to Simulator at the end so your studio is making both?

No, I'm not involved with the making of YanSim, although the lone developer of it happens to be a good friend of mine. That other Yandere RPG was just a little something some friends and I started working on, but it's on a bit of a hiatus at the moment. So yes and no, I'm only involved with the RPG one, not YanSim.

Incidently, I only came to know Ryukishi through one of my other friends working on the RPG, who also happened to follow the development of YanSim on it's blog at the same time I did, several months back. It's a very long story, but the YandereDev (YanSim), my Yandere Interactive team (YanRPG), and Ryukishi (07th Expansion/Higurashi), are all connected in various ways.

I'd go into more detail, but there's quite a few things Ryu asked me not to disclose in public, like with things relating to members of 07th, info on this upcoming Higurashi arc (and possible futures arcs) on Steam, etc.

TL;DR It's a small world, yeah.
Update: I have been given permission from Ryukish07 to commence with the project, and am currently in the process of typing out the script. If anyone is interested with helping (ideas, localisation, etc) just uuuhhh message me. Or don't, whatevs.
I don't live in the country, but with enough time I might be able to plan a holiday around the time. If your play goes ahead, what time of the year might it be staged?
