During the first game, the new sprites should not bother you. Nevertheless, during the second game, the characters show a smarter side of themselves, but with the new sprites they look foolish (Rena looks like a puppy, Mion is too girly...). Even though the original sprites are ugly, their expressions are more accurate than the Steam version.

This. Having played with the original sprites and seen screenshots of the new sprites, I can say pretty clearly that the new sprites do not always show emotion well/properly and also lack the "charm" factor that the old sprites have.

The latter is subjective but the former is potentially a huge problem.

Pretty much every thread like this one ends in a flame war.

So it's a requirement for a "true higurashi fan" to like the old sprites? No offense, but you sound like a wannabe elitist.
Don't bother prefacing an insult with "no offense".

The whole point of an insult is to offend.

Pointless sexualization and showing the wrong emotions are definitely huge problems, and I wouldn't really recommend anyone play with the new sprites...

if it wasn't a problem easily fixed by readily-available easy-to-install mods.

If you want PS2 backgrounds with the original character artwork, go ahead. If you want PS2 art and VA on the original background art, that's available, too. If you want the Steam sprites fixed to show the correct emotions/be less needlessly sexual, someone took the time to edit the new spritework just for you.

Apart from the original spritework's nostalgic "charm", they really have nothing going for them. The art is so objectively bad on a technical level, I can't help but feel sorry for Ryukishi, and only feel happy that he's improved since.

How can you say old ones are less sexualized if SATOKO has TITS! in those and not in new ones. x )
Old ones are more expressive cause they are 'caricaturized'... more expresive ok! New ones seem more sexualized cause (excluding face-head) they are closer to real human proportions.

do you want more expressive ones... go old sprites (men ones are just too funny for me.
do you want more 'modern anime'-higher quality... go new ones.

I'm playing the game (chap 9 or so) and I don't feel I'm losing anything. And I sometimes swap to see old one's expressions.

The game/writing is great if you like this kind of stories no matter what sprites you like/display.:vleft:

it's not so much about more expressive or less expressive, rather some of the screenshots I saw of the new sprites were flat out DIFFERENT expressions.

Also, if you can get over the lesser technical quality the old sprites have more "charm" imo, but that is of course highly subjective.

Well, at least till chap 9-10 where I`'ve read, I've just found that they share simmilar expresions. Old-caricturized, of course are more expressive (you call it charming, I think, but that's very subjective). And new ones, "less expressive" but show 'feelings' as in any modern anime desing. So players should be used to.
That's what I think in an 'objective' way.

And now, in my opinion. Old ones are too ugly-caricaturized. Males... just don't look like males. Kids (satoko) have 'strange developed' breasts. etcetc. They kind of 'special'. I find them 'supportable' if you think about an old game with low cost designer. Nowadays they won't have any chance to be published. And I can find 'charming' desings in modern VNs. x d

I'm not saying "don't play with them" or that I don't understand their value. Just, that new designs are a very very good idea and work.
And playing swaping with 'P' just gives an extra value for the game making it more fun and helps players to make an image of how it was the first time it was published.
P and F shortcuts are great decisions.

Thanks to the developers!

How are the new sprites sexualised anyway? Like, what's sexual about them? They're pretty much just regular anime girls in school girl uniforms. I don't see the sexualisation at all.

Unless you mean Jirou. He's pretty sexy.
Sokarrat Jul 10, 2015 @ 6:59am
I think they mean it cause 'caricaturized' sprites are always less realistic than non-caricaturized... and realistic can be more sexualized. "stilized" bodies, shorter skirts, etc. Even so, Satoko's breast at old sprites are just odd.
Same for male characters, as you wrote in your last sentence. x D

Chaging 'topic'.... I'm now in the last part of the game.... I keep swapping between old and new ones with P. New ones are more 'frightening' for me. I could read old ones were more 'expressive'.... but, in my case, new expressions show better what the game-text wanted to show to the reader. Just my opinion. Amazing job from the artist.

Have fun! :happy_creep:

I played it first time through with the new sprites and found it surprisingly creepy (the sound effects are very good imo), since I'm not usually unsettled by horror novels and such. Not sure it'd have had the same effects with the old art. I disagree with the consensus that the new ones are less expressive, I quite like the new art honestly.
