Is IL2 Dead?

I would absolutely LOVE to play il2 but I'm not sure how many people play it. I don't want to sink my money into a game that no one plays.

It's not really dead, it's more just a niche, one that can sadly be fulfilled in a more accessible by other (worse) games like War Thunder.

Il2 great battles series is done. It is in maintenance now.

1cgs has moved on to a Korean War era sim and are developing a new engine.

So, what do you want? A ww2 pvp or pve sim? Those may still exist but the community is very small now.

If you want a sp experience I’m not sure what it matters how many players?

GB is far from being in maintenance mode now. We are about to release FC Volume 4 and announce the Odessa DLC, which will include a brand-new map and eight new planes.

As others have said, this game has always been niche. The polling for this game that was sent out to the player-base early on (not sure what the numbers are now) show that 95% of the player-base plays exclusively single player and I am one of those. But there are some servers that are popular and generally have people on. Though there has been a lower number of people on those servers after a long bit with no communication for the next project. Now that Odessa has been announced some players have come back, but they lost a lot of people when they opted to go silent. Previously where was always something being worked on that people saw, but after the battle of normandy released, there was no new announcement right away and people started to feel like the devs just gave up on the project.

They now have now announced Odessa which is great news, but that pause caused a lot of people to come to the concluding that it wasn't being worked on. This pause to my knowledge (not a dev) was due to a change in management after the old project lead left the company to built a different flight sim based in the pacific. And the new management staff opted to delay the announcement of the project they were working on.

I'm just looking for a wwii flight sim. I play War Thunder but it's too arcady for me. I just found out about IL2 from one of Growling Sidewinder's videos from 2 years ago.

If you are looking for a 'non-arcady' ww2 flight sim, then you are in the right place.

There is also a PvE server, where all players are one side and the other side is AI, but I forget the name of it. It is possible it has been shut down?

Also note that you do not have to buy DLC to enjoy a MP server. The game is structured so that it installs the entire code base, so even if you haven't unlocked an aircraft, it is still able there for you to fly with or against. Likewise with maps. If you join a MP server, you are not required to have unlocked that map.

The restrictions will come up with aircraft available for you to fly: you can only operate aircraft you own. The rest will be greyed out. (although iirc you can still be a gunner on appropriate planes)

There is also a lot of SP content available if you aren't looking for MP.

eight new aircraft? wow, that's a suprise! I knew the map was planned but didn't realise a new "bundle" was enroute.
