IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad

IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad

It's crazy how much IL-2 sucks compare to DCS.
Im watching this video ( linked below) from BF-109 attacking bombing formation over Paris and there's lots of bombers in there, they all stay in formation and they have escort protecting them.

I look at IL-2 Sturmovik, the supposed WW2 flight sim and it sucks so bad in comparisons. How is it that a dedicated WW2 game cannot achieve what DCS has ? DCS isnt even WW2 focused.

DCS has its faults too.

There's competitors coming perhaps they'll satisfy?

I can tell you from playing DCS from 2008 to now, it is an awesome cockpit sim but when it comes to the AI and the damage modeling and the environment, its still somewhat stuck in its Flaming Cliffs days :(
Yeah, well...No game is perfect that's for sure. But for me that video hit a nail cause that's basically the only thing I want to do in WW2 flight sim, is to re-create bomber attack/Bomber defense.

And in IL-2, used to be awesome back in the days, but for some UNEXPLAINED reason, you can only do 4v4 in skirmish with the modern ones... And then I stumbled on that video from DCS and it was pure joy.

Im just mad we cant do the same thing in IL-2

Some of the most immersive combat flights I've ever flown have been in Reflected's "Wolf Pack" P-47D and "Blue Nosed Bastards" P-51D scripted campaigns for DCS. You really have to stay on top of procedures to operate the aircraft correctly. But, I could only bear to play through 2-3 missions from each campaign. They are long and exhausting. Also, DCS's physics modelling feels a bit exaggerated and twitchy, especially if you don't have rudder pedals. Even gentle taps of the brakes while taxiing risks a nose-over.

IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles doesn't have heavy bombers and therefore it doesn't do strategic air war very well. It is however better than DCS is for tactical air war operations, and the developers have played fully to that strength. Ground attack in BoN or BoBP feels more organic than DCS ... IMO. Or maybe the flight models just feel more forgiving, which is a factor when you just want to have some fun dropping bombs and tangling in dogfights.

I haven't seriously played DCS in a couple of years because the single player mode is (or was) very limited unless you want to build your own missions in the editor. The cost-to-benefit ratio is high if you want to own your modules, not trial them for a few days. You have to buy a map; you have to buy the WWII assets pack; you have to buy a flyable aircraft; and you'll probably want to buy a missions pack just to get a decent experience out of that single aircraft. To replicate the intercept in the video you linked:
- DCS Normandy 2.0 map ....................................................................... $48 USD
- WWII Assets Pack .................................................................................... $30 USD
- DCS: Bf 109 K-4 Kurfurst ....................................................................... $50 USD
- Bf 109 K-4 Jagdflieger Campaign by Reflected Simulations .... $10 USD
and to have a smooth experience you need to have 4k $ in computer and peripherals.
LOL i love DCS but its WW2 content is a mess , completely lacks focus to make an immersive experience the planes available are all over the place. But yeeeah , clickable cockpit though.

Yeah but just to buy 1 jet its almost 100$ in DCS and its extremely sophisticated. atleast with IL2 you can still play it on mnk.

Probably in 20 years' time when we all own quantum computers and AI can make the code, we will get the game we all want

The only thing that suxxx are the flying skills of the guy in the video.

BTW:

For me, AI And especially a realistic damage model are important.

DCS does SUUUUUUX at that.

So nah, I stay with IL 2.
