As for my first suggestion about learning to paint, adding artwork over the default Spitfire camoflage is one of the easiest 'repaints' you can do with the paint kits because the skin's alpha channel isn't much of an issue. Natural metal aircraft are kind of a pain in comparison. I think there are 'quick and dirty' ways to paint over existing skins too that may not even require GIMP, just Microsoft Paint or a similar basic image editor.

I don't know where I'm going with this. I'm a Photoshop user in my day job but I'm stuck with GIMP at home, and for me the differences between the two programs is like going from Android to iPhone. Also, I'm not very familiar with the Spitfire templates and their mapping quirks.
