If you're familiar with flying aircraft in the series, think of tanks as being similar to bombers. The crew compartment you are occupying dictates what duties you can perform. Each crew member has a specialized role. The driver can drive the vehicle but can't do anything else. The gunner can operate the main gun and the coaxial machine gun, rotate the turret, and choose ammunition type. The radio operator can operate the bow machine gun if one is equipped at his position. The commander is the most versatile position: he can 'drive' the tank, select targets for his gunner and for his platoon, direct waypoints for his driver and for his platoon, and allow his gunners to fire at will. (Hint: use the radio menu.) A Sherman commander can also operate the anti-aircraft .50 M2 machine gun mounted on top of the turret.
