IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad

Prop pitch controls not working
i was flying the il-2 1942 and i needed to have my water radiators 80-100% to keep the engine cool, this is at around 90% rpm and 80% throttle, i found a forum where someone claimed they could cool the engine with only 30%-50% water radiator so i googled why this was happening and i found that it might be because of prop pitch, but the keys i bound to prop pitch don't seem to do anything.

or maybe i just have to accept that the war will be over before me and my il2 reach the front line.

any help is much appreciated

Some key assignments will be on a "AXIS" or a "BUTTON", what type of flight stick are you using or not?

Anyway I have no issues with pitch control on any of my IL2s.

Default keys are "Propellers RPM control" = RShft + minus and RSht + equals. Try these and see if they work.

Maybe your prop pitch is set to auto in that case use RShft + P and try again.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply

1. I'm using a HOTAS Saitek X52 Pro

2.i have RPM control working but not prop pitch.
buttons don't work, tried binding them to keyboard and joystick, neither work.
Throttle for example, when changed gives me a message on the right hand side telling me the current throttle setting in %, prop pitch does not do this.

3.Are the 'Propellers: High Pitch' and 'Propellors: Low Pitch' the right key binds or are they not what i use to change prop pitch?

Ok, to clear things up prop pitch and rpm are related. Increasing the pitch will decrease engine rpms and decreasing the pitch will increase engine rpm. Now that is clear.

I use to use a X52, I had prop pitch (RPMs) mapped to T4 switch.

Yes use High and low pitch and bind them.

IL2 MOD42 (and the others) you should be around 2050RPM and 1100Hmg max continues.
Oil temp in 40°-80°C, 85° max. Oil out 115°C and 120°C max. Water at 80°-110°C.

If you need to cool engine have you tried opening the oil and or water shutters? There are a lot of variables to engine temp, you have to constantly manage your RPMs, fuel mixture, oil and water shutter. Of course if you fly many German planes that is all auto.

Let me know. Good luck.

Thanks,

I think i sorted it. i went on multiplayer and flew well with 80-100% water radiator and around 20-25% oil radiator, but i'm not sure having to use 100% water radiator is a good thing, i thought i must be doing something wrong.

I compared the top speed and rate of acceleration of water radiator 100% oil radiator 25%
to Water radiator 50% and oil 25% and i did not really notice a difference.

do you know if it is normal to use high water radiator settings in il2 1942, i saw someone in a Ju 87 Stuka set the water radiator at 70% for the climb.

You want to maintain temp within operating range of that aircraft, usually on climb and working the plane you want to open shutters to maintain that temp the best you can. On descending you want to close them so engine does not get to cold. Speed.is not the important thing here, it's your engine, if it cooks speed is your least problem. There is no real rule, you open and close the shutters as needed. Depending on ambiemt temp I have flowm around with as little as 10% open, snow maps.
