View with hat switch
I'm used to playing DCS and have just got IL-2 for a better WW2 experience. I'm still mapping controls but one thing that I cannot figure out (and the biggest annoyance so far for me) is not being able to map the view controls properly.
I have the free look style which I use my HAT for (what I'm used to in DCS) with the left and right mappings but when I try to do up and down it does that weird fixed to one spot and then zoom in thing. It also returns when you release the button with the up and down mappings but not left and right.
I have checked the mappings over and over and just can't get it working how I would like. Any suggestions or help?

It's been a while since I've used the HAT (I've gone to VR) but I recall there is a toggle for the various 'camera' modes. This video explains the modes:

Get yourself a cheap head tracking solution or VR headset.

Hat switches are fine for civilian aviation sims to check out the pretty views etc but they just don't cut it in a flight combat simulator if you want to be competitive.

You have an immediate handicap if you choose the the hat switch option to view your surroundings in a aerial combat simulator.

You need the view to be in "PAN" - I think the default key is F9. Make sure you have the HUD turned on so you can see you've put it into the correct one of the three or four available modes. I use that view, with the hat switch for looking around, 3 stick buttons taken up with zoom out, zoom in, reset zoom, and a fourth for snapping the view back to the centre. It doesn't reset the zoom unless centering from enemy padlock as the last view, which is useful if you usually have to break the padlock to regain control of the aircraft...

I've done all that and it does the stupid snapview thing. I appreciate that head tracking would be better but I've got by fine playing dcs for years without the need.

It took me a few days to work this one out as well, if it makes you feel better! The 4 controls you need to have assigned are Pilot Head: Zoom In, Out, & Reset, and Pilot Head Snap Position Centre. Once set, you then need to unbind any other controls that were assigned to those buttons - mouse hover the little orange boxes to see which assignments conflict and remove the old one accordingly. The button I was trying to use was also mapped to Snap View Down and it took me far longer than it should have to work out the problem. I hope this helps!

Thanks haggis I'll try this again tonight after work. It's been driving me crazy and just doesn't seem intuitive at all.

Thanks but that still hasn't worked. It's weird because the left and right is fine it's just the up and down I can't get

Ah got it finally. Snap position forward and back rather than up and down. I thought I was going nuts not being able to find that.
