The game most comparable to this series (the Great Battles series) is its predecessor from 15 years ago, IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946. It has WWII Pacific aircraft and carriers. The graphics are dated but it is still a good game with lots of content.

There is also the interim game IL-2 Cliffs of Dover and its recent expansion Desert Wings Tobruk. It is an evolving series and VR support will added.

DCS World is a high fidelity, VR-supported simulation sandbox. It has WWII aircraft and maps. It isn't as 'offline player' friendly as IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad but if you enjoy deeply studying combat aircraft this is the premiere simulation.

War Thunder is the 'everything' game. It's designed for online combat.

Those are the best contemporary games I can think of. There are also many old classics that still fit a niche, like B-17 II: The Mighty Eighth for example, but may not work well on modern hardware or satisfy current tastes.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I remember Wings Over Flanders Field originating as a free mod project for Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3 more than 15 years ago. The screenshots at the WOFF and WOTR websites look really nice but I still see the CFS3 game engine in them. Back in the day I played CFS3 a lot because it did a few things well, but overall it was a hot mess compared to the IL-2 "1946" series, even with the mods available for it at that time including FirePower by Shockwave Productions. I'd personally be reluctant to buy WOFF or WOTR in 2021, but I do admit the dynamic campaign looks interesting.

Speaking of commercial versions of community mod projects, there is also Battle of Britain II: Wings of Victory[a2asimulations.com] which is itself now an aged release that was based on the even older classic "Rowan's Battle of Britain."

For World War One aerial combat sims, there is of course the Rise of Flight United series. The IL-2 Great Battles series was actually built upon the ROF engine and you can see similarities in the game trailer.

Also on Steam:
Aces High III
WarBirds
303 Squadron: Battle of Britain
War Planes WWII Dogfight
** I've never played any of these games. I'm only pointing out that they exist.

Unfortunately the last fully dedicated WWII Pacific air combat sim I know of is the old Combat Flight Simulator 2. (IL-2 1946 has more flyable aircraft but smaller maps centered on specific battles.) It is only available on used CDs and, umm, "dubious" digital download sites.

WoFF and WoTR are indeed based upon the old CFS3 DX9 engine - but the devs have totally rewired the hot mess that it was. It now has DX10/11 tech and some of the best combat AI of any sim. It also has a great SP campaign but no MP.

Bob:WoV 2 is still available online to purchase and was a cracking sim, but there are a lot of issues with it running on W8/10 - the modders are working on it still, but it is still a dice roll as to if it will work or not.

If jets are your thing then there is also the thirdwire series, and they did a half decent WW1 sim (first eagles) but no direct WW2 sim. However they are pretty long in the tooth now - but they do have a shed ton of mods available for them.

Despite my best efforts I gave up on WoFF. I could never get the control map program to work properly and could never map controls. Stucks because I really wanted to play it over RoF.
