difference between the IL-2s
Hello

there is an IL-2 battle for stalingrad (which as a lot of DLCS expansions and planes)

and then there is an IL-2 cliffs of dover (which has the tobruk expansion)

these are different games??

also the tank battles campaign is for IL-2 stanlingrad? like i need to purchase IL-2 and then the tank expansion??

lastly i play DCS mostly (not super hardcore pilot mode) with hotas and trackir .. how difficult is IL-2?

You need Battle of Stalingrad to use Tank Crew, but there are no career for Tank Crew. it only has about 20 scripted missions.

You better stick with Battle of Stalingrad if you want to play career or even MP. from what I heard CloD doesnt even have career mode.

You can buy Battle of Bodenplatte if you want Western Front career.

Battle of Stalingrad is a newer game, Cliffs of Dover is a Remastered of older game.

1) Clod was originally released 2011, so it's an old game. The Blitz version is just a "remaster".

2) The new IL-2 BoX series is still in an ongoing development. The next addon called "Battle of Kuban" will be released in January.

3) Basically IL-2 CloD and IL-2 BoX don't compete against each other. CloD offers planes from the western front of 1940 while BoX series offer planes from the eastern front of 1941-1943. In the future, BoX will also have "Battle of Bodenplatte" addon, which focuses on the west front of 1944-1945.

4) Clod and BoX are very similar realism and graphics wise. They are both good simulators. They both contain about similar amount of planes currently, but BoX has expensive premium planes. They both contain singleplayer and multiplayer modes.

--------------------

However, if you want the absolute maximum of planes and content (especially great mods), you should buy the original IL-2 game. Its fully complete edition was released in 2006 and is called "IL-2 1946".

Personally I prefer IL-2 1946 because it has so much content. However it takes some time to set it up graphically and otherwise.

Steam makes things complicated. To better understand the series first look here: https://il2sturmovik.com/store/battle-of-normandy/. All of the red products in the right hand column can be combined with other red products as you prefer; and the two blue products can be combined with each other. However, if you want to launch the sim from your Steam library or you'd like to buy any of the "DLC" from Steam, you have to buy Battle of Stalingrad from Steam for the red series, and Cliffs of Dover for the blue series. Red can't be combined with blue though.

If you only want Tank Crew (and not the aircraft titles) you can buy TC as a stand-alone at the website. Or, you can buy Stalingrad on Steam and some of its DLC on Steam and other parts of the red series (for example Battle of Normandy) at the website and link all of it together in your Steam account.

The Stalingrad/Great Battles series supports VR. The Cliffs of Dover/Desert Wings combo has interactive cockpits and you can operate some controls with your mouse. Other than theaters and content, that is the significant technical difference between the two series.

IL-2's gameplay is arguably 'easier' than DCS WWII. The aircraft in DCS are twitchier in flight, and are more difficult to taxi, take off and land in. I think of DCS as a procedures trainer with guns. The IL-2 Great Battles series is more about combat and pilot campaigns and getting you into the action, but it is also a fairly deep simulator depending on how you choose your realism settings. It doesn't have interactive cockpits like DCS aircraft. "IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover" and its Tobruk expansion kind of falls between the Stalingrad series and DCS in difficulty and game play style.
Pro tip: Although, reasonably priced, to many the game series can seem expensive.

So, my tip is to wait for one of the many frequent astounding sales and grab BoS here, then once linked (easy to do) one can buy content from both the Steam Store and more importantly, the dev Store.

This way, you can get all the lovely stuff not fully released on the Dev Store and indulge in the sales on both storefronts.

That said, I *think* BoS is currently very cheap to buy anyway! Get it!

S!

so from i am understanding its better to look for battle of stalingrad s its more new.

one of my major reasons to look into this was due to the tank campaign (and the new one they announced).

but yes for a ww2 flight sim i wont mind playing the air part as well

and yes i will wait for the sale as the autumn steam sale is also close, if not that then the christmas sale to look for

If you just want Tank Crew, go here: https://il2sturmovik.com/store/tank-crew/

The *only* reason you have to buy Battle of Stalingrad first is if you buy things on Steam. Steam does not support modular games, hence all the other games in the Great Battles series have to be added as DLC. If you buy them off the website, you can buy any single entry you want and use the game's own launcher without issue.

and then there is an IL-2 cliffs of dover (which has the tobruk expansion)

these are different games??

Yes. There are technically three main series in IL-2:

The original IL-2 Sturmovik.
IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover (CLoD)
IL-2 Great Battles (the newest one).

Cliffs of Dover is an older game on an older version of the engine, but it's still actively developed and maintained. The primary difference is that it covers a different historical period and theatre (Battle of Britain) while IL-2 Great Battles covers mostly the eastern front war.

Every entry in the Great Battles series covers a different historical time period on (mianly) the Eastern Front and is centered around a specific battle: Stalingrad, Kuban, Moscow, etc. The newer entries, Bodenplatte and Normandy, move over to the Western Front.

You might interest in Steel Fury Kharkov 1942 if you want tanksim campaign . cheaper, more content , amazing mod. better A.I.

you fight alongside with Infantry, which this $70 Tank Crew DLC doesn't have. enjoying load your HE and blow up those foot soldiers.

The downside is you might need to install mod to fix this old game to run on window10(but my game working fine without it),but don't worry there are guides here and it is easier than installing Skyrim porn mod.

or Steel Armor: Blaze of War for Dynamic Campaign tanksim, but it is really complicated to play and you have to command a whole tank platoon like 10 tanks, it is fun if you have time to learn but I prefer Steel Fury that I mostly have to drive only one tank and blow up a stuff without worry about whole my tanks platoon gets rekt and ruined my whole campaign in second if I didn't babysitting all of them.
