IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad

All my dogfights are a circle jerk
I can't quite grasp how people have these moments when they tail someone in a straight line and just mow them down?

Seen quite a few videos like that, and in all of them the enemy doesn't constantly turn like in my game.

I tried going in from above, from below, to intercept from the side, chasing - all comes down to one type of chase. How do I avoid that? Cause it's getting old

I don't think you know what "circle jerk" exactly means.

The AI in this game is bad and really annoying at times. If you want an actual challenge then go on multiplayer servers.

I'm still relatively new to the game and feel like I'll get my butt handed to me in no time in multi

Because most kills wont happen like this. No one will fly in a line so you can shoot them easly. It only happens if it's a bomber and can't really do much. Someone who did not see you. Or someone who lost lots of power and can't really do much when flying at 200km/h or less.

The thing is that the AI in singleplayer literally flies in a circle as its only tactic 1v1. And it always sees you.

That's because those videos were most likely multiplayer vids. The victim never saw the impending attack. That's also how it happened in real life to most of the pilots shot down.

AI sees all.

I felt that way to when i first played the game flying bf109,untill it dawned on me that i was the one that persisted with the endless circle combat and the russian was simply using his turning advantage.if you cant get a good firing solution break away and engage the nearest target, but dont forget that the origional is now somewhere behind you. After awhile youll find plenty of planes flying straight and level that you cant catch and be hopeing they turn.

One of the first things I realized in this game is that the bots cheat badly. So if you are trying to catch a bot unaware and ambush them like you see in videos, I'm loathe to report that you will not be able to do this. The bots, simply put, are clairvoyant. It will always know where you are, what direction you are moving and how fast. Bomber gunners, when controlled by bots act in some kind of funky hive mind, passing information between them instantaneously and always have the gun ready for when you enter their field of fire. At the end of the day, it is due to the bots not being very good.

If you want a credibly realistic opponent the bots won't give it to you. Bots are good trainers though, but not for dogfighting. If you want to learn how to dodge well aimed fire, bots got your back. They are very good shots. If you want to learn to hit a hard-turning target, bots got your back. They are very good at riding the bleeding edge of a plane's turning capabilities. But if you want anything that isn't those things...

If you want to have a good time in MP your best bet is to find someone to play with. To be quite blunt, team work is OP as ♥♥♥♥, and even two mildly competent players can beat the best if they work together well enough. The MP environment is rough for a newcomer. That is just the way it is. But if you can stick it out and analyze your behavior and mistakes, the repeated blows to the head will teach you what you are doing wrong and how to go about avoiding those actions. If you work with someone who knows better you might be able to avoid some of those blows to the head.

If you want, hit me up, I'll fly with you. Though I tend to play the Soviet side, the team stacking online being what it is I can't bring myself to play German most of the time.

Yes, AI in this game is just very bad. First, you always encounter AI planes at same or slightly higher altitude than you. Second, their planes don't have a real flight model. It cheats according to the level of difficulty.

Last game, I was escorting bombers. As soon as we cross the border, enemy fighters (Yak-1) attack our fighters, leaving our bombers untouched. As our bombers continue their mission, I have 5 fighters chasing me deep over our territory. The AI Yak-1 seem to have overpowered engines with unlimited gun ammo. Not realistic at all. It was on difficult level. Almost impossible, if possible, to energy fight with AI. It deserves serious modifications because it highly lowers the value of the game.

Good to know it's normal AI behavior and not me always failing at ambushes.

The Ai uses the same Flight Model as the player.
