Is it possible to play with an Xbox 360 Controller?

Yes, you can. Thumb sticks and the trigger buttons will be enough axes to control an airplane. You'll need the keyboard for some things but you'll be able to fit all the important controls on the controller.

It's not really working, the game wouldn't recognise most of the Xbox360 Gamepad's buttons.
I am convinced IL-2 is a great game but playing with my mouse (I dont have a Joystick) kills all the fun.

There are some cheap quality joysticks out there, thrustmaster t16000m for example!
It is a good investment, open up various game genre for you such as flight sims and space games.

$37...cheaper than a microsoft branded xbox controller and you'll have a lot more fun. Be kind of gentle with it..but if it does break..it's $37 freaking dollars and i think i picked mine up on a walmart shelf.

Xbox controller CAN be used...but it won't be the best experience..

technically. but it would also be 'possible' to play with a guitar hero guitar with enough remapping. def not the way it is meant to be played though. I would suggest a good HOTAS and TrackIR/VR.
