Tips with russian aircraft
With the Yak-1 and La5's , i find it very hard to compete against German aircraft such as the f4 and g2 because they have better performance, engine wise.

Any tips with dealing against more agile/more powerful 109's? As getting into dogfights favours the 109's engine and ammo count.

Im no expert by any means but i try to ensure i have the upperhand in speed/height most encounters and do my best to keep them in turn fights at lower alts.

Im also happy to run away if i feel im not doing well.

Lastly, since ive learnt not to be scared of 109's im downing them more often in "weaker" planes.

The Germans can dictate the engagement simply because they have the faster and better climbing planes. Catching them when they are in a low energy state is the key.

The la5 is the fastest plane in the game below 1500m. After last patch, it is fairly maneuverable as well. So down low you can fight on equal terms with 109s. If the 109 tries to out run a la5 below 1500m he is in big trouble because the la5 can hit 600kmh in level flight with the boost at those low altitudes.

With the other Russian planes, baiting the Germans into a sustained turn fight with you down low is the only way to beat them most times unless you get lucky and happen to find one in a low altitude, low energy state while you are above them.

Beware when attempting to bait them into a turn fight. A well flown 109 with high energy will be able to turn with you and yo-yo you until he spends his energy. If you screw up before that he will eat your lunch.

If you're flying in MP you should definitely find some friends. A wingman is a must unless you are very good or don't mind getting killed frequently. Without a wingman you must look out for the drag and bag, a favorite tactic of German MP pilots. One will engage you then zoom off. When you give chase another will bounce you while you focus on his mate.

Don't despair, in air combat if you find someone on your six and you're in range of their guns the only thing you can do is try to create problems for them until someone helps you or you can force a mistake out of them and capitalize by reversing roles. In that situation if you make no mistakes, he makes no mistakes and you get no help, you WILL get shot down. Sometimes in this game that's exactly what happens. The key is dont get in that situation.

Yak is better turner than 109 and you should use that.
If he have greater energy advatage bait him until he loses it and than go after him getting him in turn fight or pursuit.
On low alt if you chase 109 closing rads can help a lot by gaining speed.
Also how to bait them to lose energy advantage and when they are on your six; learn defensive maneuvers like barrel roll and scissors!
Same goes for offensive maneuvers, google them.
Also you need to learn in what moment to turn if he is aproaching with higher energy and speed so he overshot you.
When taking off from airfield just climb climb climb, plane with higher alt has better performance and chance to win the fight.
There are more tricks but it is hard to describe them in here.
If you can join some sqadron it will help a lot, lone wolfing is always risky.
Yak is very competent plane against 109 just learn how to use it.
Good luck!
