IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad

IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad

1946 vs Bos
I like both games. I really do. I'm a noob go say the least but I enjoy the games.

That being said. I must objectiavly look at both games.

Bos has great graphics. Great flying mechanics. And accessible and intuative designs. It lacks in aircraft however compared to 1946. The biggest plane in Bos is the he 111, compared to the me 323 or the pe-8 in 46.

I'm willing to admit that 1946 does have a lot of expansions under its belt and bos is still in development with kuban on the way. But it seems rather fighter focused at this time. Will this change?

Also I've grown accustomed to the 1946 version of keyboard for flight as opposed to the mouse for flight in bos. Should I invest in a joystick?

I would definitely suggest a joystick.
I've been happy with the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, but if you have a bit more money to dish out, I myself am upgrading to this soon;

joystick is essential, head tracking helps with immersion and improves you'r all round ability. buy both

I second the logitech extreme 3D pro. I upgraded to a better joy stick a little while ago but I used mine for years. You really do want a stick for both games thats not just a BOS thing.

1946 is a great game with amazing scale but BOS is the next generation. The flight models are better with a more detialed damage model. I still play 1946, it's aged well but the age is very noticeable.

I don't think BOS will ever have the prototype planes that 1946 has. BOS leans to the simulator side more. I play 1946 for fun dog fights but if I want to go on a long mission and fly with only the indicators then it's BOS.

i think i like 1946 better cause it has the planes i like, but i didnt get much chance to play this cause setting the camera the way i like makes the camera zoom whenever i try to look around :c

The only reason I play 1946 now is for the Pacific theatre. Also because of Lowengrin's excellent dynamic campaign generator.

Taking off from a carrier during the Battle of Midway and having the suspense of looking for and finding those Japanese flat tops before their planes found yours in that vast ocean is second to none.
The thrill that finding and sinking them first evoked was awesome.

If and once we get a Pacific theatre in this however I can't imagine finding myself going back to 1946 any longer.

Well there is no if, it is when. After Kuban they are moving on to the Pacific Theater (Kuban contains a lot of what they are going to use in the expansion after it. Pretty much is a stepping stone).

I agree with you entirely, I started out in IL-2 with Pacific Fighters. The experience was like no other, carrier ops just are way more fun to me than anything else.

lol, yea. Gotta love timing sometimes.

Here is some info for you:

"Larger Picture:

Over the next few years we plan to meet four major goals with our engine, technology and products.

1. Build the technology and features the community wants to see in our products and try to re-capture some of the magic that made the original Sturmovik so much fun. We call it the “Spirit of ‘46”.
2. Continue to use the Eastern Front as the proving ground for our engine, technology and game design for a little while longer. By making Kuban next, we will leave the Eastern Front a well-appointed theater that fans of the Eastern Front can enjoy it for a long time.
3. Move to the Pacific Theater and build a first-class simulation of Carrier Warfare which dominated that theater.
4. Develop features, methods and opportunities to increase community involvement in the creation of interesting content and increasing social interactions between players to build a stronger community."

The reason I said if is those plans will only stay in place if sales of Kuban go well, from what I've heard.

But yeah, the Pacific just generates so much excitement for me. I remember once, a zero had shot out my aileron controls in my F4. I made it back to my carrier and sucessfully trapped using only my rudder and power adjustments. Times like that and the adrenaline rush, really stuck with me.

Plus with the recent Team Daidolos patches the AI is really excellent and can be extremely deadly.

Ahhh gotcha, my fault. Just thinking about the Pacific Theater and with the new Dynamic Campaign system (Which has been my primary holdoff for flying this often) just has me excited.

Have you tried PWCG? It's a really excellent campaign generator and many preferred it to the default ROF campaigns. There is a unified version that generates campaigns for ROF, BOS and BOM. It may be just what you need while you wait.

I may have to take a look. As long as it allows me to feel like a cog in the machine and has some persistence then I am up for it.

Thanks

I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It will take a little reading so you can tweak it the way you like, but it really is quite excellent.

Here it is.
