you need only down then back not quarter circle, furthermore with input shortcut on you can perform the same move while never leaving crouch with down then down and back... without ever going to pure back, that way you stay crouched and require only 2 inputs rather then 3 (standing is basically a 3rd input even though its not actually an input)
so basically you don't need to quarter circle you still can and have it work however.
you can also use alt control and require a quarter circle, this can be handy if you accidently are doing specials when say crouching and then trying to do a back + attack button basic attack.

I prefer the D-pad too, but i only have an Xbox 360 controller and it is horrible compared to the PS i used to have.
Any recommendations on a good D-Pad controller?
P.S. I had 360 controller already, but switched just for Dualshock 3 d-pad.
