How to unlocking Story Mode

You unlock it by Leveling up, I think. I played Single Fight a few times, leveled up, and then Story mode got unlocked (and so did Scorpion and Sub-Zero)

This is correct. You guys didn't unlock story mode. You have to wait for it to download. Everyone of those 29 downloads is a part of the game (ie. characters, stages, story mode) If you try to pick a character that isn't downloaded yet (gray portrait), or try to play a mode that hasn't downloaded yet, you will crash the game. Might as well just let all of them download and install before you play. Just make sure that when they're done, close and reload steam.
