Developer bias, gotta love it.
I guess so. But Scorpion is SERIOUSLY overrated. There are so many other characters that are just as awesome yet never get any airtime. Its a shame for sure.
Plus all through the MK10 sequence all I wanted was Sub Zero to dice Scorpion into tiny fragments, doesn't help when I see him getting his head pulled off...
Its just because scorpion wants to murder sub-zero and spoilers if you even care about a fighting games story:
Scorpion does kill sub-zero in mk9.
Yea he does but Scorpion gets killed in the first place which is where the whole thing is from. Sub Zero kills Scorpions entire village in fact.
I think MK9 is the 'wrong' Sub Zero thats killed but Scorpion isn't leaving it to chances.
If you REALLY want to get down to the nitty gritty, Sub-Zero (Bi-Han, who transformed into Noob Saibot) actually killed Scorpion first. Scorpion then got resurrected into the wraith that he is, he will never see his family again and must live eternally with the curse. Then, in MK1, Scorpion killed Sub-Zero in revenge. MK2 onward, Sub-Zero is actually Bi-Han's brother, Tundra. Scorpion actually spared this Sub-Zero's life when he witnessed Sub-Zero spare another combatant's life and became Tundra's guardian for a brief period... though that storyline was obviously a short lived canon.
Quan Chi lied about Sub-Zero having killed Scorpion's clan and family, it was actually the sorcerer himself who did it. Thus Scorpion's hatred for Quan Chi.
As for MK9, Kuai Liang (Tundra) was the one who was killed as Bi-Han is still Noob Saibot at that point. Seeing as it is an alternate storyline, that deviated from the original plot.
Back to OP. As for why? They became the classic "rival front" of Mortal Kombat. Scorpion has always been the preferred fan favorite over Sub-Zero. Liu Kang was originally supposed to be the star of the series. He, in fact, won the first four Mortal Kombat tournaments.
Ah thanks for jotting my memory. Liu Kang indeed was awesome. Didnt he die?
It gets a little confusing with the alternate stories and whatnot.
I have to say though my favourites are probably Sub Zero, Raiden and Kenshi.
I heard you can play as Goro with the pre-order? I cant seem to justify slapping that much cash down for a beat-em-up though. Sure would be interesting to play as him though.
Seeing as I'll be pre-ordering the PS4 Collector's Coarse Edition for the figurine, and pre-ordering on Steam, I have no problem handing over my cash to Ed Boon. I want to see more MK in the future, and I will invest in that future any way that I can.
Thats fair.
I pre-ordered the MK9 for PS3 and had the Sub Zero getting owned by Scorpion statue. It got trashed in my last house move so it had to get thrown away but I do remember how poor in quality the item was, which was a shame. I wanted the book ends that were for the US version more tbh.
I don't think I have a payday between now and release to get a pre-order in so ill have to see about after release.
Not sure exactly what I make of the stances prior to a fight however. Id much rather switch on the fly.
Unfortunately I was broke AF when MK9 came out, so I couldn't afford the CE at the time. Eventually, I want to order the bookends off eBay or something. It's sad to hear the statue was bad quality... I was thinking of getting that, too.
As far as the fight stances go, I wouldn't forsee them working on the fly, it was a pretty terrible juggle when they introduced the multiple fighting stances in... was it Deadly Alliance? Man, I sucked at those. But I also haven't played that game since I was about 15 or so.I ended up just fighting in one stance. You'd have to combo in and out of said stances.
From what I gather, the idea is to have a stance based on your personal preference; defense, offense, and not sure about the third... maybe a mixture of both. I'm pretty offensive, always flying around the screen, jumping/ducking to dodge and using block only when necessary. So it's an easy decision for me. I can see how it would be rough for others to choose though.
But then ive always liked the ability to switch and change on the fly. I was a massive fan of Tekken Tag Tournament and DoA2 when I bought them. The ability to swap in a character mid-combo was awesome.
I also liked in Tekken how Hwoarang changed stanced mid fight which changed his moves.
DA, as far as I remember, was the first game to really experiment with the weapon system. They introduced weapons in MK4, but all I remember is being able to pick them up. I also think they added weapons to combos in MK3/UMK3/Trilogy, but they were just for show on the sprite. Not actually a selectable stance or anything.
If done right, switching on the go could be cool. But I think that since it didn't really work out well in early adaptations, they decided to go the route of variations. From the amount of time between MK9 and MKX, I would almost assume they tried to get some kind of flow going with it and couldn't, before resorting to what it is now.
The only fighter I have currently in my steam library is Injustice Gods Among us which is a pretty awesome fighter. Just like any MK game it has lots to do on it and a surprisingly good story. I didn't like the inclusion of Scorpion on that though, just felt like it was added for adding sake.
Just the same as I didn't like Freddy Kruger on MK9. Firstly it was the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ version of Kruger and secondly it wasn't necessary or even relevant. Kinda cheapened it for me. Kratos too actually.
Ive half thought of getting another DoA but last I remember they spent a lot of time and energy into how the boobs bounce. As a teenager I loved that feature. Not so much now. I do remember the level transactions were pretty cool and the flow of the combat was amazing. Your talking me into it here...
Street Fighter X Tekken worked fine when I played it. Microsoft redacted their claim to shut down GFWL, but I wish they'd bring it to Steamworks instead. It's a pretty solid game. I'm not sure about online play, but solo was fun. Speaking of Street Fighter, it'd be nice if they actually did something new with the franchise. I'm sick of Capcom putting out six versions of the same game just for new fighters and slight tweaks that could've been patched. They haven't progressed like MK, no story mode, no nothing except for online or solo. That being said, what I've seen of SFV looks just like SFIV and all its various versions.
I feel the same about Freddy in MK9, I also thought the same thing... the crap version of him. Though I think they were attempting to go with the comic version of him, he just ended up looking like the dude from the reboot movie. As for Kratos... didn't play the PS3 version, but I felt that he was oddly out of place. I hate when games try to add console specific characters to games. Like Soul Calibur... 4 I think it was? Maybe 3. Link for GameCube, and whoever else for the other consoles.
Injustice was awesome, but not enough gore or blood for me. I actually wrote the 100% achievement guide to it here on Steam. I personally enjoyed the Scorpion inclusion, only because I kicked ass with him. But that kept me from ever actually getting good with any of the other characters. I bought it mostly to support Netherrealm, and I'd heard that it was a good fighter. But overall, I'm a Marvel guy as opposed to DC. I really only like Batman (mainstream, I know).
Now there's a series that would be sick on Steam, but I doubt we'd ever see it. Marvel vs. Capcom. I remember back in the day I got MvsC 2 on PSX. One of the best fighters for sure.
