Mortal Kombat X
How to start doing bigger combo strings... advice!?
I'm just messing around with a-list Jonny Cage in practice, learning his combos, I have managed to teach myself a few 3 hit combos like X A X which send them flying towards the corner and X X Y, there are few variations, but I have not manged to keep a combo going longer than this, unles I have the opponent in the corner and do an attack which bounces them up and do a string of just X X X X X and I can get like 10 hits, it only does 20% though.

Where can I learn how to start stringing the smaller combos together, must I use the meters and stuff for this? I feel i am ready to learn this stuff now as I have played a lot of MK in the past, \i under stand how to juggle and have got the rhythm of a list jonny down now, I think he will be my first Character as I am rather familiar with cage from other Mk games (I wanna try out tremor, d'vorah, liu kang, Takeda and a few others as well for other options too though, johnny cage is looking like a solid choice for me though if I can get some bigger combos learned.)

Watch youtube videos and look, which combos fit for u, that`s it...and what means "learning his combos, I have managed to teach myself a few 3 hit combos like X A X"? 1. he has no 1,3,1 string, as far as i know, and 2. the combo strings are all in the move list...stupid thread...
yeah, I just got bit mixed up, I meant X X A, XXB amd XYX. theres also fwd Y, B B I think and Back A, B A or something which are the start of juggle combos, I may have them slightly off as I have only just learned them.

I need to larn this whole (1, 2, 3 etc) I guess 1 is regular punch, 2 is high punch etc?)

anyway, no one cares, go away please. I can post a thread asking for advice if i want to, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ arse hole.
watcng youtube vids of pros nailing huge strings isn't going to help me understand the mechanics of big combos though is it, thats why I specifically asked for guides, links etc . I asked how to extend combos past just pressing buttons or starting with an attack that launches them into the air as the standard is 3 hits, just because I said a combo wrong, doesn't mean you have to be a bellend about it mate. it goes a long way in this world to be nice to people.

I just said tthat it`s a stupid thread and u start with that? So who is the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥? Watch youtube and start up with some lower combos, not the max dmg ones. There are so many videos online...ure propably just an idiot...really...
as far as i know you need to cancel a combostring into ex nutpunch to enable a bigger dmg combo with a lot of hits

http://www.testyourmight.com/threads/the-official-johnny-cage-combo-thread.51325/

i would also try playing kung jin bojutsu if you are new, he have easymode combos
a lot of combos on this site are hard to do but there are always 2-3 combos which are not to hard and can inspire you
In my opinion those mega kombo's don't work well because the opponent is blocking and attacking, moving around, etc just try and learn the %25-%30 ones those work good and are simple to master
first... sorry for going off on one, I'm just tired.

Second, thanks for all info...I was actually going to ask if there were any characters that were good to start with.. After watching some a-list johnny, I can see he uses the nut punch a lot to extend stuff.

My last MK game was the £D one on PS2 so there are a lot of deeper mechanics here that I am yet to grasp. on the surface, X looks a lot like the early games though, I'm sure with some practice it'll all start to make sense.

Will try kung jin out, any other sugestions, also if anyone knows of any guides or specific youtube uploaders that have been of use to you and you don't mind posting a link, it would be appreciated. thanks.
Hi Nurgles,

It seems like you don't understand what a cancel is. To do longer combo string, you'll want to link your specials with your basic combos. I'm not a Johnny player so I'll use Jax as an example.

Before that though, think of the 1234 you see when people discuss moves, as the top row buttons, then bottom row buttons from left to right. So 1 = X (reg punch), 2 = Y (strong punch), 3 = A (reg kick), 4 = B (strong kick)

Jax has a basic combo 123. Jax has a special B(ack)F(orward) 2 in short, BF2.

Jax can link his basic 123 combo with his special. Now, when linking combos with specials, you can just input the 123 combo, wait, and then input the special. That's two different attacks. You need to do it fast enough, or within the cancel frames to link them. For most combo->special links, it usually works when you input it all as one input, like this:

123BF2

You'll want to experiment with Johnny. Sometimes when you link with the special, it will just end, but sometimes, especially with EX specials, the special will do something different so that you can continue with another combo. I know that Johnny for example, his EX nut punch will launch the opponent into the air, allowing you to do another combo.

thanks. no, I have only played around very briefly in the game so I don't know any of the deeper mechanics. Last Mk game I played was deadly alliance and that was like 10 years ago or something! Thanks for explaing. I have deceided to try and play Ermac Master of Souls or Kung Jin Bojitsu or something along those lines anyway, will play Johnny further down the line.

Lots of good advice above, and cancels are a big part of this. There will be metreless and metre combos as well. Many characters can do high 20's to low 30's metreless in this game.

Someone linked to Testyourmight above, and that's a great forum.

Go there, read up on some of Cage and his combos. Write down one or two that look reasonably simple, and then go to training and try the first part of it. Then see if you can extend it. If not, try the second part and see if you can do it, then try linking again.

It's all practice, timing, and cancels.
Fisticuffs just start out with back 1,2,1 and repeat and try to cancel it before the tenth hit into nut punch until you got it, and then chain that to ex nut punch. For A-List try practicing your combo cancels such as 1,2,hold 1 to run cancel, and try forward 3, hold 4 run cancel, and if you catch the opponent mid air do 2,1 shadow kick hold 4 to run cancel and continue from there. For Stunt Double a good starter into knock back is forward 3 cancel into mimic shadow kick after the input for mimic, in button inputs its- f3,db4-bf4. and if your quick enough in the corner you can use down 1 to continue
thanks. I'll have a proper read through all of this.

I got a meterless for ermac that is really simple that does about 36%, it's a good place to start off as I have it broken down into segments to learn it piece by piece.

I think master of souls is going to be a good starting place for me... I will come back to Johnny a bit later on though as I love all of his variations.
