Game won't load options after "Press Enter Button" screen
Hello, I really need help with this issue. The first time I loaded up the game after installing it yesterday, it was running well and I played a single-player fight against a bot. I wasn't getting as many FPS as I had hoped so I turned down my video settings and then closed the game just so they could fully load.

Then, when I next opened the game it booted up fine with the logo screens etc. but when I get to the actual menu screen where it says "Press Ent. button" I press enter, but instead of bringing up the game options it just comes up with.. nothing. It's just the background of the men/weapons etc. behind where the options should usually be.

I have tried (in order):
1. Validating the files in Steam (2 had to be replaced from what I remember)
2. Restarting my computer - did not fix the issue as some had suggested doing.
3. Uninstalling and then reinstalling again (did not help despite thinking it would).
4. Reaching out to WB Support who said I should try verifying my whole Steam Game Folder - I did this, it didn't work.
5. Clearing download cache in the Steam options which they said could help as well - did not work either.

That is everything I've tried. I've also left my computer on shut-down mode overnight if that might matter at all.

FYI: I bought Mortal Kombat XL (Mortal Kombat X with the DLCs) but as the DLCs took up more storage than the actual core game and I didn't know whether I'd get into the game enough to use them, I unchecked them before doing my installation. Does this change anything, could it be a reason?

If anybody could help, it'd be greatly appreciated.

I have had this exact issue for a while now, same position as you tried everything, WB Support doesn't know how to fix it, and it took me 4 or 5 posts to even get a single response on here, suggesting players don't know how to fix it either. Unfortunately, the possibility of getting this fixed are seeming rather slim.

It's genuinely so stupid man, I don't know maybe it's just my specs. I bought the game in hopes of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ playing it not sitting on a bugged screen. So ♥♥♥♥♥♥ that nobody knows how to fix it even when, really, WB should've patched this ages ago. The games been out for 6/7 years yet there's still this bug and there is NO concrete fix. What are your specs - do you have a powerful/new-gen CPU/GPU? Because mine are not very good so it could be why but I'm not 100% sure.

Once I get a better computer for gaming in a couple months/a year I'll most likely end up seeing if I have the same bug in the game. I can't imagine there would be the same glitch on a completely new and better device but isn't it stupid how the only obvious fix seems to be paying money for a completely new device or hardware??

Did you buy it as a key externally or straight from Steam? Did your game work the first time round?

Yeah my specs are pretty high, and I bought it directly off steam, its definitely not related to that. I played the game for about 25 hours years ago using a controller, and now years later I've been wanting to play it with a keyboard and this is happening.

It's very strange as well because the game clearly recognises that a keyboard is being used, seeing as it says press Enter in the start screen, so its not like the game is stuck on some controller configuration or something. I can also alt+f4 out of the game without issue, so its not like the keyboard stops working when the game is launched either, meaning the game just must be refusing to read inputs on a keyboard.

I suspect this is just a result of mkx specifically being a terrible PC port, which is entirely on them, and should have been fixed by now. I sent about 5 emails back and forth with WB support and by the end the guy just said that he has no more advice, but the issue will be forwarded to the development team, though I doubt that they are going to roll out a bug fix anytime soon for a 5+ year old game.

Damn, that's so strange and irritating. Like I said, I'll probably keep trying for a little longer and then if I run out of options my only other options will be to get another device. I also wasn't aware that the MKX port to PC was ♥♥♥♥♥♥, should've probably researched it better. Also odd that it was the same for the directly Steam-bought version, as I thought maybe it was a key issue.

This is very disappointing and must be even more frustrating for you as you A. Paid more than me for the game (I assume). B. Are not even able to refund it anymore as you've got 25 hours on it.

Condolences to you man, will keep trying to fix it. Will update if I do, if I don't then sucks.

Indeed, I wondered if perhaps reinstalling steam itself might do something (reinstalling the game, as we know, does nothing), might try that at some point if I can be bothered to reinstall all my games again. Otherwise I suppose all one can do is hope for it to fix itself somehow, or they by some miracle roll out an update that fixes it. At least mk11 works well to keep me occupied in the meantime.

Hey okay, kinda small fix that only really works if you don't care about progress (which I don't mind at this rate, at this point all I want to do is play it occassionally). You can delete the save file EVERY single time you play - extremely tedious and not a good option for somebody like you who has 20+ hours of progress, but so far the only other way to play it is that. Sorry that that's the only 'fix' I could find, but for me it's atleast something as it makes the game playable for periods at a time.

Fair enough, good to know at least one possibility.

Hi, not sure if you even remember this thread or the game itself. After 9 months of leaving Mortal Kombat X untouched I decided to download it again. I didn't download the DLC initially which is what I believe my initial problem was as I bought Mortal Kombat XL. When I did this and launched it, it had the same problem as I had in this thread.

Then I downloaded the DLC and wiped the save file. Now it works, surprisingly. Not sure whether you had XL also and didn't download the DLC but I believe that's what fixed it for me. I also disabled my integrated graphics card in 'Device Manager' as I've got a dedicated GPU now and ran the game in administrator but I don't believe those to be what fixed the issue, just providing more information. Hope you're having a good day.

No problem bro, I spent a lot of time trying it and waited months before I came back and finally figured it out. Have a good day. :steamhappy:

Hi. I read the entire conversation. I don't have any DLCs, so the solution is not applicable for me. Any other ideas?

Same problem here, just unplug network cable after you pressed x. That's some network issue.
