There's a few suggestions here for you.
1) Do you have an alterative controller like a PS (DS) 3 or 4? They are set-up better for fighting games I have found. You can probably get a licenced clone for around £20.
2) From what I understand of the game it will read both analogue and digital inputs as equal. More like the old school way controllers used to work.
3) There's mixed reports about Keyboards. I have little experience with a keyboard so I can't offer advice there.
3) How's your soldering? A pair of replacement rockers are pretty cheap - -around £5 for a pair. This video might help you out a little if you are prepared to do the fix yourself.

And yeah, i totally dislike other type of controllers. I use an xbox controller because it's the model that suits my hands the most. I can't afford to get an elite controller but anyway, a friend of mine had an elite controller and it turned into scrap in less than a year. Rubber pads peeling off and buttons becoming sticky... Like i said, it's really the dead zone that is too tiny, i would need a software that enlarges it... Windows's calibration utility is way too archaic to achieve this part. I would somehow need an advanced driver or something.
About mortal kombat, i never played such games with thumbstick, it's uncomfortable because it's way too slack to be able to precisely do [< >] or [v < ^] or stuff like that, all it ends up doing is corner arrows and these aren'T good enough for moves to engage while d-pad is times more precise for the purpose. lol... So i would kind-a need to disable thumbsticks but only for mortal kombat x)
It's a second-hand gamepad also, i had to fix the left trigger once, with double-sided tape to hold the magnet in place x) Was quite an experience to get there. Didn't have the screwdriver to open it whole so i had to craft some kind of a scythe out of a food can and stick the magnet to it through the holes under the removable plastic covers x) That was jackass as heck xD
I just bought Grim Dawn, the game has gamepad support and the cursor stays right in the middle the way it should... that's why i say my gamepad is far from being battered. It's either mortal kombat that is too sensible, either windows that would need a more advanced calibration utility tho
