How do I properly escape being grappled?

I am at the mission at Benny's nightclub and after going upstairs and defeating the first set of thugs there is a short cutscene which results in wei being grappled and I am having mixed results in escaping grappling. The 'E' prompt is on the screen as is the left click when an enemy is in front of me yet even when spamming 'E' to death I am still unable to escape. I have escaped a few times but I have been unable to replicate whatever I did to escape.
I was just curious whether there is a certain timing involved or do I hold 'E' when it appears or only when it flashes? I also wonder does attacking someone whilst grappled using left click influence anything? It annoys me as I am thoroughly enjoying the game but am unable to proceed past this point due to this hiccup.

Have a look at binding the function to the MMB (Middle Mouse Button) / another mouse button, instead of the keyboard binding.

At first I was spamming the 'E' key like crazy and wasn't escaping. I found I had to slow down how quickly I was pressing the 'E' key to get results. As you slow down you should notice Wei start to break the grip. So in short, too fast doesn't work and too slow won't work and you kind of have to work out the timing and I found that once I got used to it, it became fairly easy to break those holds.

Now the quick breaks where a letter or a click pops on the screen for a fraction of a second... I have slow reflexes so I fail those a lot.

quick break depend , it's not always the same key .

left shift for cops and e or f for the big guy.
