Cant get the game to launch
I thought posting this as a general discussion might get more people to see it

It's different from other people who cant get the game to launch because a window pops up for a few seconds with a white screen which then closes. Launching from exe does the same thing and there's no error message. tried verifying, tried reinstalling, tried setting the graphics to nvidia rtx in nvidia control panel (it was already set to it) nothing works. Can i fix this or should i request a refund?

Have you tried going into the Properties of the game .exe file and in the compatibility tab enabling "disable fullscreen optimisations"? Disabling this has fixed some games that wouldn't run for me on occasion. Good luck.

You could try creating new file under data inside game folder called DisplaySettings.xml and pasting there this:
<?xml version="1.0"?> <DisplaySettings> <Version>1</Version> <AdapterUID>-366315160</AdapterUID> <MonitorUID>71405901</MonitorUID> <ResolutionWidth>1366</ResolutionWidth> <ResolutionHeight>768</ResolutionHeight> <RefreshRateNumerator>144001</RefreshRateNumerator> <RefreshRateDenominator>1000</RefreshRateDenominator> <ScalingMode>default</ScalingMode> <ScanlineMode>progressive</ScanlineMode> <Fullscreen>0</Fullscreen> <Stereo3D>0</Stereo3D> <StereoEyeDistance>0.0300000#3CF5C28F</StereoEyeDistance> <VSync>0</VSync> <AAQuality>0</AAQuality> <TextureDetailLevel>1</TextureDetailLevel> <ShadowRes>1</ShadowRes> <ShadowFilter>0</ShadowFilter> <MotionBlur>0</MotionBlur> <SSAO>0</SSAO> <FPSLimiter>1</FPSLimiter> <Option3DDepth>10</Option3DDepth> <Option3DConvergence>10</Option3DConvergence> <WorldDensity>0</WorldDensity> <GlobalSetting>0</GlobalSetting> <EnableLowResBuffer>0</EnableLowResBuffer> </DisplaySettings>

If there is already one you could try set Fullscreen to "0" to make the game run straight in windowed. No idea whats going on with the dx11 on win 10+, but I had similar issue while doing some modding with the game and the game sometimes uses to crash on launch multiple times before it start properly. Besides you could try compatibility mode to windows 7 and make it run as administrator by default.

Unless i did something wrong by opening the xml with notepad then i did everything and it still didn't work, looks like i may just have to refund.

I should also mention i'm on windows 11, so it might be an issue with the new OS

Compatibility mode on both windows 7 and 8 didnt work either, as well as fullscreen optimizations being disabled (it launces in a window on a blank white screen for a few seconds before it can even fullscreen)

You could try dxvk, but you gotta look up for some tutorial how to get it work it might fix all the issues if it is even related to os and dx11. I back then used to run win 10 exclusive game via dxvk on win 8.1

I have the same problem as the original poster.

The problem:
* The game won't launch.
* A blank, white window pops up for a couple of seconds.
* The window and the game then automatically close.

Error messages:
* Nothing on the screen
* Nothing when launched from command prompt
* Event Viewer shows the following in the Application Log:
Faulting application name: SDHDShip.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x543d6bb0
Faulting module name: SDHDShip.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x543d6bb0

This game worked a couple of months ago, anything changed?:
* NVidia drivers have been updated a couple of times
* I upgraded my memory from 16gb to 32gb,
Note: more demanding games like MS Flight Sim work fine
* Steam may have shown me a window about Visual C++ redistributable
I clicked through accepting defaults as I wanted to load the game

Things I've tried - none made any difference:
* Running the game via Steam.
* Running the game by clicking sdhdship.exe directly in Windows Explorer
* Running the game by launching sdhdship.exe from a command prompt
* vcredist_x64.exe & x86.exe repair
* vcredist_x64.exe & x86.exe uninstall, reinstall
* Compatability mode for Windows 8
* Compatability mode for Windows 7
* Disable full screen optimisations
* Run as Administrator
* Combinations of the above 4
* Steam verifying my local files
* Uninstalling and re-installing the whole game
* Sacrificing a goat
* Downloading Visual C++ 2010 redistributable X86 and X64 from Microsoft and uninstalling, reinstalling
* Finding a copy of msvcr100.dll and dropping it in the sleeping dogs folder
* Deleting my saves
* Switching off my anti-virus
* Prayer
* Downgrading my NVidia driver back to v536.40
* Downgrading my NVidia driver back to v528.02
* Uninstalling GeForce Experience

Out of ideas, and the fact the game shows no helpful message to give me a clue where to start isn't helping. I wonder how many people are affected by this? I can't imagine many people are playing. Maybe if they tried they'd discover it no longer works.

I ended up just refunding the game but since it sounds like you've played it before this you probably don't have that as an option,it's a shame too cause the game seems like a lot of fun
Custard Aug 5, 2023 @ 3:17pm
Game's a riot. I got 3 hours play time before it borked. So I'm not getting a refund.

I fixed it. Somehow. It was something to do with the Elgato Capture card between the PC and the monitor I was trying to use. It worked on a monitor without the capture card. I updated the capture card drivers and juggled the main display between my two monitors and now it's working on both monitors including the one behind the card.

Not 100% sure which thing I did fixed it... or precisely what went wrong... but... it's working again. The final lines from Burn After Reading spring to mind.
