I'm sorry, but story is kinda bad.
Idk what people have been smoking to think the story is good, full of plot holes and wasted potentials, and nonsense, I just find it really hard to believe that Sun On yee or whatever they are called would just let Wei live after his cover got blown, everyone but Lee was cool with him being a cop? I just find it hard to believe, especially for a chinese mafia. Wei's backstory wasn't really flashed out as far as I know, all we know he's been in usa, sun on yee are reason why his sister died and why he hates them and thats all, no what he did in usa or anything.

We find out more about what he did in the U.S over the course of the game, through the police reports. He was a police officer in San Francisco, where it's implied that he killed a drug dealer who had ties to the Sun On Yee. He also doesn't hate all the Sun On Yee, just a few of them; specifically, Big Smile Lee and Dog-eyes. He PARTICULARLY hates Dog-eyes, because Wei's sister died of a drug overdose, and Dog-eyes was the one who got her hooked in the first place; you find that out during an early bit of dialogue. That same bit of dialogue reveals that Wei's mother moved the family to San Francisco specifically to give Wei's sister the help she needed to get clean. Finally, Big Smile Lee would have opposed Wei's rise through the ranks no matter what, as there's an internal power struggle going on in the Sun On Yee between Lee's faction, and those who support the Sun On Yee's leader, Uncle Po. Uncle Po's supporter's know Wei's family history and background, and they know why he left Hong Kong in the first place. Dog-eyes is a member of Lee's faction, and everything Dog-eyes does is on Lee's orders; because of that, Uncle Po's followers know they can trust Wei, no matter what. This is all revealed during the cutscenes and in dialogue.

Playing the game and paying attention to some of the stuff going on with the mission as well as the cutscenes fills you in on some of the story, but like Val mentioned, you can also read the reports that unlocks for more backstory. You're basically playing a detective cop who's undercover, so do some detective style clue hunting!

The side missions can also fill in a bit of the overall story too.

I fully agree. The story is great and well written as his past is not just plain out there but you piece it together from the pieces you get with his interactions. It's a great story vehicle as it lets you later understand his own motivations and inner struggles once his different loyalties are tested.
You want a bad story? How did you possibly mix up Sleeping Dogs with GTA 5?

He was allowed to live because the Sun On Yee leaders respected what he did to help them.

Yes he was a cop, but he wasn't just screwing them, he played an important key part in helping to get the wrong people out of power and the right people in. And as a result he was respected and allowed to live.

In organised crime things aren't always as black and white as you (or Hollywood) seem to think.

I didn't. Sleeping dogs story is not that great, don't mix that with the gameplay, game is still good from that perspective.

OP, everything's fleshed out in the after-mission police reports or in conversations that occur during missions. It just requires reading those reports when they become available.

"Well If you read my reports Raymond you would have known"
They were in the unlock able reports that give some backstory on the characters.
I do agree that some extra side missions would have helped flesh out the characters a bit but overall they were pretty cut and dry nice all around.
