[Spoiler] Okay, so what makes Warren so special?
The AC supposedly groomed and recruited Warren to be his agent in destroying Limbo, the critieria being he had to be between living and death. But since the AC is already running wild on the mortal plane, it doesn't seem hard to set up another guy even if Warren decides to kill himself at the end.

I just completed all the scenarios in the main story, so I can only say as much as the next person with the same degree of certainty, but I'll tell you my take on the situation anyway.

From what I understood there isn't anything particularly special about Warren himself, except that he just happens to be an unwitting pawn of The Stranger's (The Devil, The AC, etc) master plan against purgatory.
The plan which for all we know has been in the works since at least the time when Cervantes tells Vasquez to "Follow the Red Star" in the beginning of prequel mission.

I honestly don't recall any dates being given so there isn't really a good way to tell how much time has passed in between scenarios, however we do know that towards the end of that scenario, The Masked Man is created. Also by the time Warren encounters him, warren has enough time to grown into a man, (granted it is impossible to say how old warren was at the time of the prequel mission, I believe it says he was 12 at the time of the tutorial mission). On top of this, the masked man has built himself a vast criminal network, essentially he has the time to firmly established himself.

What this all means is that the Devil has been invested in this plot for likely at the very least around one decade, though likely much longer due to the nature of the series of events that set Father and Warren on their path. Cervantes, under Bathym Raum, had established a satanic cult, with members willing to butcher an innocent woman (your Mother), thus ending the crack shot but otherwise normal father and son duos' journey on the Oregon Trail. The destitution of the area, likely caused by the Devils influence on local leaders like The Mexican gangster, and The Masked Man, drove Father to purchase the would be Bad Luck amulet from the Stranger, which lead to the eventual downfall and Fathers exitus from group.

I find Father's departure to be particularly interesting as I believe it wasn't necessarily part of the plan. I suspect possibly Father was supposed to die due to the harshness of the situation, or atleast upon leaving, lack the resolve to oppose the Devils plan via stopping Warren. It's possible that the narrator, or Death, had something to do with Fathers newfound resolve when he adopts the role as The Undertaker, or possibly his revelation after his failed suicide. I believe something to this effect was hinted at by the narrator in the last fight between the two posses, though it is also possible the narrator is simply referring to how the Devil has been steering things the whole time.

Let's talk about Florence, I believe she and her family are just ordinary farmers who happened to succumb to life in a cruel environment under the Devils influence. It's possible that Warren was somehow steered towards Florence vie the Devils manipulation of events, or that Florence family are just another in a long list of casualties since The Masked Man released the Devil. Either way, Warren now had an attachment to another person who could potentially go to Purgatory, which is convenient with Father leaving the picture.
It's possible that Father could have fulfilled the role that Florence provides had she just been killed by raiders along with her parents. That role is essentially a profound loss that justifies in Warren mind, his decision to go to Purgatory.
It could have easily been Father going to Purgatory in search of Mother, if Warren had not been in the picture.
The Devil just needed someone both desperate and determined enough to go the full distance required to see his own chaotic goals met.

So after all that the point I tried to make is that I don't think that Warren was special in any supernatural sense. He ended up being an integral pawn in the schemes of greater forces, but I believe anyone could have been the victim in the attack at the start of the game, Warrens family just happened to suit the purpose as well as be in the right place at the right time, unfortunately. If you consider Vasquez and his journey, at the end he has to release the Devil, meaning the Devil was at somepoint in the past, locked away, or somehow prevented from coming into being. It's likely the Devil has been trying to break Purgatory for a long time, and since no one has killed him, he'll continue trying long after Warren.

TLRD; I think The AC was just pissed that his plan failed.

The Devil should have had his army of people trying to break Purgatory.
I get that maybe Warren was the only one willing to sell his soul, but like if the Devil had enough pull to make a bunch of frenzied bandits slaughter a whole series of towns, I'm sure at least a few of them would be willing to sell their souls and be half-dead.
I mean like do the rabid satinists just draw the line at genocide?

It seems with the amount of demons running around, there are very little opposition against the AC. So what's the hurry in breaking Purgatory? We don't know the extent of his power, but it surprised me for such a cunning manipulator he put all his eggs in Warren's basket and had no alternative plan.

In addition, I thought it would have been nice to connect the lower path scenarios to Warren by making Warren's family descendents of the Clairvoyant. That would give them some inherent power and explain why the AC chose Warren to do his bidding.

Well consider all the planning, and the simple answer. Nothing made him special. That type of long term planning, is ussually set up with back up plan after back up plan. If plan A fails, at least is sets into motion or makes pieces for a later plan.

So when we have plan A fail, which is the search for gold by what would become the mask man, and inquisitor, we still end up with 2 pieces for later plans. The mask man motivated by greed, may even become the tool to use for the Purgatory plot, if the greed is only strong enough. Meanwhile Cervantes and the formation of is mad bunch, further spread the madness and chaos, that creates other potential tools.

So when a family like Warrens is traveling thru, a subtle move, creates more ripples. His story is not the only tale of woe, and every one is another potential tool. Even plan B, was likely directed into making Warrens father the tool for the Purgatory plot. A man who lost his wife, cursed by bad luck. Whether the father or son is killed next it matters not, either would provide a potential tool. When the father leaves however, and walks away from it all, Warren is simply the last potential tool, in this particular link. AKA plan C. (or maybe D or F or Z, we have no idea how many plans are truly in the works)

There are plenty other tales of woe, and due to the massive empire of the masked man, anyone of them could have a run in with him. The only thing special about Warren is that when that tale reached that critical point, he took the deal.
