HOW TO PLAY PLATYPUS SUCCESFULLY ON WINDOWS 10
First off, let me state off that this might not work for all of you. But for those of you that this guide will be of help, let others know.

First step is to make sure you have the game set to compatibility mode and to run as administrator. I am using Windwows 8 mode. Also make sure you have Windows DirectPlay enabled.

Guide for DirecPlay here:

https://windowsreport.com/enable-directplay-windows-10/

Second step is to disable overlay settings from Nvidia Experience. (Origin overlay and Discord overlay too if you want to use them while playing in order to minimize problems).

Guide to do so here:

https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4228/~/disabling-the-geforce-experience-share-in-game-overlay

For the third step you will need to download a program called "Riva Tuner Statistics Server" in order to limit the framerate that Platypus runs on. Many older games get HUGE problems from running on too high of a framerate, which on a modern pc will go well over several thousands.

After you've installed RTSS, start up the program and select your Platypus.exe file from the bottom left of RTSS program. Next up you want to limit the framerate to 60 from top right. (from steamapps\common\platypus)

Link for RTSS here (Scroll to bottom of the page):

https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/rtss-rivatuner-statistics-server-download.html

I am playing this on a 4k screen and high-end pc, on Windows 10 x1809 service pack. Game should hopefully work now. The initial problem for me was that the game would open up but instantly freeze/crash.

The freeze was permanent and nothing could be done about it

Didn’t work for me and hundreds of other people. What kind of ancient brick are you playing on though?

Ignores all steps and just clicks "refund".

I can not even get the mouse cursor to move from the top left corner. I have no idea how the game plays, although it has pretty interesting music. Not worth the price of admission though I am afraid. And part 2 is choppy to say the least. I died in less than a second when I was lucky enough to get it started.

Platypus 1 works perfectly on my MSI Ge63 i7 1060. Just click Play.
Exiting the game bck to Windows doesn't work though - I had to Ctrl-Alt-Del / Signout

Well I tried all this and I can not get Platypus to run on win 10 :(

I simply got a refund. It was not playable in any sense of the word. What a shame. Game looks fun and has a great sound track it seems.

Honestly I just wish there was windowed mode because it mucks up my resolution every time. Other than that it works fine for me on Win10.

Worked! thanks a lot!
I just disabled nvidia overlay and set everything off (except vsync) for this game in the control panel, and worked.

My problem is weird and seemingly unique. It just gets stuck on the initial loading screen with the sleepy Zs, music plays but it won't get past that at all!

To make mine work I just made it run on the dedicated card vs the integrated one and I have no problem now, except maybe a FPS drop when big stuff explodes

run compatibility mode, and to do that, you need to search platypus directory and change compatibility mode from properties.

IF any of these options doesn't work, try to download (NOT FROM WEBSITE) direct X drivers from windows 10 "apps and functions" tab, then click "optional functions" and click add function, then find graphics tools (directX). It worked for me.

I recommend to turn on "Direct Play" function

Tested on Dell Inspiron 7559
Windows 10 Home x64
GTX 960M

A slightly easier fix that should work pretty well in the future, without installing stuff:

Download and extract this file into platypus install folder: https://mega DOT nz/file/DGBGhaoD#M5n_LgFAqtFWLgsIVB-MClmuk-GFmJbxw6gcn0W-5v4

How to make these yourself (if you're paranoid or my link goes down, etc..):
1. grab https://github.com/blitz3d-ng/blitz3d-ng - Platypus is based on the Blitz3D engine, this is a modernized fork of it.
2. make an executable of any sample program with d3d7 rendering, save in platypus folder
3. download & install CFF Explorer
4. open platypus.exe in CFF explorer
5. go to Resource Editor > RCData and rightclick 1111
6. save resource (raw), save it somewhere
7. open your executable previously made with blitz3d-ng in CFF explorer
8. go to Resource Editor > RCData and rightclick 1111
9. replace resource (raw)
10. select the resource you saved in step 6.
11. click save in CFF explorer, answer yes to overwriting
12. rename platypus.exe to something else
13. rename your newly made executable into platypus.exe
14. copy fmod.dll from blitz3d-ng\bin to platypus folder
15. have fun
