Are you able to host/connect when the VPN is turned on? If so, is it using a LAN game or Online game? Traditionally, our game will go out of its way to avoid using VPN adapters when hosting/joining online because the Unity networking backend is virtually guaranteed to fail with it.
The cave bit is incredibly specific, though, and something I've not heard a report of just yet. I really appreciate you reporting this and I'm very curious to hear which type of game you're hosting/joining.
Sorry on the late response here. As far as VPNs go, we strongly recommend using your VPN in LAN games rather than Online, since the online mode will do everything in its power to go around your VPN. With a LAN game, you can specify the network adapter used for hosting, and this is much more likely to ensure successful connections in the first place.
If your VPN has any form of bandwidth limitations, they may be exceeded right as the cave is first loaded. Lots of things get spawned over the network all at once. Alternatively, I'm curious as to whether Parsec attempts to drop a connection if the application is temporarily unresponsive. That bit is total speculation, though. I didn't know about Parsec until your post (seems cool though!).
I would currently suggest switching to LAN games with friends on the same VPN. This is the general intention of gaming VPNs like Hamachi in the first place. Alternatively, you could turn off the VPN and just host a regular online game if some friends are not on the VPN. Our game uses a package called NAT Traversal which attempts to run multiple simultaneous connection methods and keeps the one that works first. It usually has good success rates.
The Parsec piece of the puzzle, I admit, is a mystery to me.
Hope the LAN distinction helps though! Good luck!
