Hey, if you are really talking with the devs that is awesome! I have an incredibly specific request:
Please ask them what would be necessary to enable customization of the source of the audio track which accompanies the gramaphone music-player thingy. I enjoy the default classical tunes, but obviously I also want to bump Deep House and Trance while diving, so I'm going to figure out how to make it happen some way or the other. Software is just layers, and somewhere in the code it's just an asset path or URI, and I want to put in my own tracks :)
@natekomodo it would be really cool to discuss modding with you, as you clearly have put in some time on this already. I want to learn as much as I possibly can about the internals of WNTGD, because I want to be ready to start coding right away. If there are any languages or frameworks I am new to, that is a great chance for me to learn some new skills, but at any rate the devs will be able to inform me of the technical details required to at least answer my question. If they are cool with it, how do you recommend I try and get in touch with them?
This game has a ridiculous amount of potential... What would be really fantastic is to provide the capacity for a truly rich modding ecosystem; the more customization, the better! The simplicity of the game SCREAMS for modding--2D is very accessible compared to 3D, and the easier it is to mod, the more the community will grow. If we have the means to get creative with this world, and say put in our own monsters, or textures, or sound effects, or maybe upgrade to a Gungan sub and travel to a Naboo biome... That will make hardcore fans of the game and it's developers for sure.
When I think of potential for modding, I particularly think of data structures, protocols, and API's. It would be easy enough to develop tools that make modding more accessible, if the right API were built/defined/opened up.
