But I don't have to deal with OPs complaint because I use them.
True, they do take up some space but it really depends on how you have been designing and expanding your store -- I have my storage shelves in the middle with the play tables at the back and the display and product shelves at the front; however, my store is still relatively small as I have only expanded by one complete section (i.e. 4 units). With my current layout, I still have several empty racks in the storage shelves and plenty of empty regions on my product shelves. My store may look crowded but, after expenses and paying my three employees which amounts to approximately $900 per day, I am bringing in approximately $2000 per day in profit.
Another advantage of having the storage shelves in the middle of the store (or at least close to the display and product shelves) is that my two employees that are restocking the product do not have far to travel. As my store expands, I am sure that I will be changing the layout but I am still only rank 25 or 26 so there is plenty of the game left for me to enjoy.
However, to each their own....
Hopefully the screenshot works. I did a two wide row of warehouse shelves along the backwall. Plenty of space for boxes and shelf units. And play tables off in the spare room. With room for a couple of card tables if I wanted.
I still have boxes on the floor, but it's because I make sure to stay overstocked on everything. Some items I have 4 boxes at a time of. But for the most part my store is pretty tidy.
It's also really easy to see what I need more of. And there's space for more if I need.
The only time I see workers not return boxes to the wire shelves is when there isn't room or at 9pm (Where they basically drop what they are doing and leave).
When a worker just drops a box on the floor like that usually means I over-ordered. No room on shelves.
That happens when I order during the day, a worker will take a box to stock store shelves, I will look at the warehouse shelf, see the empty spot and order, then the worker returns and puts a partial box back, Order comes in, worker then drops the box on the floor, cause there isn't room.
I have now started to order after 9pm (after workers leave) or before 8am to prevent this.
