I will jump on a open register if I see my worker getting backed up too much... it is a fun game of complete the sale and runaway... hoping another doesn't que up on it.
Work around open packs away from the register... and if you need to ring stuff up... just take over a register from a worker, they will come back when you are done (or they will move to the second register if open.
I suspect that customers pick a register fairly early on. So they'll decide to hit Register 2 while they're shopping and you're there, then you leave while they're still wandering, then they finally finish up and walk to the now-empty register. This also explains why they sometimes queue up weirdly, with Customer A waiting to the side while Customer B comes up from 30' away, then A gets in line behind them. In the game's mind, B picked the register first and was queued, even if they weren't physically near it so A has to wait on them. I could have rung you up while you were waiting on the other guy, Customer A!
Excellent idea/thought... makes more sense than my "if you are in the area" idea.
