Do boxes have guaranteed hits like 1 High rarity a box or is it completely random?

AFAIK, the only thing that is not random is that you'll never get the same card more than once in a pack.

Other than that, it's all random. You could open 4 boxes and get nothing worth $10+. You could open 20 Destiny Legendary packs and be disappointed. You could pull a ghost foil card with the 7th basic blue pack you ever opened, or not have one after 15k packs opened.

All cards are generated at the moment you open the pack, so nothing beyond each individual pack matters.

My first pack I opened for the tutorial was a Full Art Common Foil Kyrone worth 1.4k Figured it was a scripted win to get you hooked on the game.
