Stat/symbol meaning

For the speech bubble stat (chances to get events), what exactly are the events its talking about?
I'm trying to understand how and where this helps your fighter and team.

Also, if your fighter has a sword is it pointless increasing their stat for Magic Attack? and likewise if fighter has a wand is it pointless to increase physical attack stat. Thereby saving upgrades for other stats.
